I’m looking for some relatively modest, flat-ish monitors to use as computer speakers and I am considering JBL LSRs. Has anyone heard the new 306? Or should I just stick with 305? 308 are probably too big for my space/usage.

I’m open to any other suggestions at a similar price point too.

I did demoed the jbl lsr series and it’s very difficult to find anything better for the money. Maybe the hs5 if you like something more lean and ear bleeding like the hd800. The Yamaha HS5 and a sub can be fun for some people. IMHO you can’t go wrong with the JBLs

I have the 306p in a mid-sized room (~32m^2) in which I previously had the 308. The bass response was a bit much so I finally opted for the smaller woofer. They sound great, but I imagine putting them near-field in a smaller room (badly positioned) could lead to some issues.

Beware the shiny baffle, it gets scratched if you look at it the wrong way.

    Thanks.

How much space do 306 need? They would be 30-40cm from the wall, in a 5m x 4m x 3m room. Also, to what degree does 306 suffer from tweeter hiss? Mixed reports about 305 in this regard.

Tried them in a smaller room about 20cm from the back wall and did run into issues with bass response at the listening position.
There is hiss, but is not a problem to me because I sit 2m from them, but it could be a at less than 1m in a quiet room if you listen to a lot of silence.

anyone heard high end studio monitors like barefoot, pmc and quested before?
    or hifi speakers like dynaudio

I am looking to change my focal solo 6. Well, not exactly change since I don't think it will be sold in my country where studio monitors have a small market.

I like everything about the solo6 except for the styling (too old), and laid back sound.

I used to own the Solo's and now i have some Questeds. If the Focals are too laid back for you i'd advise against going Quested. Though i think they sound amazing, very organic but they could be considered even more laidback then Focal.

Maybe ATC or Genelec are more to your liking.

One other thought are you sure room acoustics aren't messing with your perception? Could be an overly absorbent room instead of the speakers.

Same impressions here. I'm looking for a pair of monitors and did listened to focal solo6 for 40-60 mins in a studio. They didn't fell soft or relaxed... on the contrary. the man was using one of those audio interface... don't know how could this influenced my impressions.

They are rather forward to my ears too, i doubt dac/preamp will change the FR that much unless you're seriously coloring it with tubes.

Focals are well known to be bright, unless compared to some headphones. Dunno if Gennies will be less laid back, Barefoot might be more agressive, but those cost a tonne.

My room is on the bright side actually.

Yeah atc is really suitable for me but it's passive. Are there any actives that sound near to atc? Atc actives are too large for me.

Just a note that I was recently able to listen to Neumann KH310’s with my Gungnir Multibit. Ho lee shiet. IMO worth the ~4 grand they cost. Best reproduction of music I’ve ever heard. (Also the most expensive setup I’ve ever heard.) With good recordings I felt like I was in a music trance, completely immersed and emotionally engaged. Downside was that bad production shines through and is distracting. For reference I am used to listening on some Genelec 1030A’s. Which are good. The KH310 was just another realm.

They do have active models; you have to look for an "A" after the numbers. The ATC SCM20ASL or 25A for example are probably the most common.

Does anyone have experience with EVE subwoofers? I like the features and they specifically mention a complete analog path for the main speakers. Others probably do it too and it's just marketing speak but still, anyone know which companies do this for certain?

If I did understand, i think Yamaha hs8m sub, focal Sub6 and the cms model all have analog path to main speakers. I saw them in a audio studio in my country

Variable HPF isn't hard to implement. The all-analog thing can be checked by running the main monitors, without the sub powered on. With that said, I've always experienced some quality loss by running through the sub versus crossing over digitally and using a separate set of analog outs.

Hmm, i'm gonna have to think about it or maybe just use some EQ to get a bit more low end. I do have some other frequencies i need to tame. Any upgrade path from Sonar work reference 3 for headphones to the latest version for speakers?

Edit: I stopped being lazy and checked your website. I guess i upgrade to Headphone version 4 first and then upgrade that to studio version? Also need to buy a mic, have been wanting to do that anyway. I got a Blue icicle usb mic pre, is that good enough quality wise for your measurement mic?

I do have experience with EVE subwoofers, the TS108. It is a perfect match with SC205 that I have previously.

I have only used Kef kube 2 before but TS108 is so much better. It is really tight and matches very well with the sc205 that you don't even know that the bass comes from the subwoofer.

    bad thing.
the amplifier was gone in 2 years.

I have a friend that uses the TS110. same thing happens.
