We should call/email to ask if they have demos in their showrooms.

Also... Wtf, charging tax for out of state purchases? That's pretty steep.

I made it to the NY show for an hour and a half or so, on a break from work, and I spent half of that time in the PAP/VPI room.

I completely agree with @thegunner100 - those speakers are magical, even in a small space, with meet conditions, pretty close to the wall. Amazing balance and airiness. There were one or two songs with very high trumpet or piano notes that sounded a tiny bit bright, but that might have been the upstream set up.

Ze'ev seems like a passionate guy, without much sales BS. He said customers can choose other drivers (Lowther, etc.), but they extensively tested and 100% stand behind the ones they sell (i.e., you can do what you like, but...)

Harry Weisfeld came by for a while and said he has (2?) of these setups at home. FWIW he said the cheaper versions capture the vast majority of the sound (as did Ze'ev), though he had a picture of a crazy floor to ceiling setup with (4?) woofers. Matt said some salesy stuff about the phono, but I'm not even sure what the price will be.

I think the source was a VPI Avenger, with an Ortofon Cadenza Bronze. I'm not familiar with either. Zeev had a tube amp, but it wasn't hooked up. Scary what tubes might do for this set up.

Most of the other rooms were so crowded I didn't even try to get in. Nothing else stood out. The Audio Note room was pretty good. The Ohms have a 3D sound, but something was tonally off. The Harbeths were good. I must have missed the Brooklyn speakers @Colgin referenced.

Too bad the NY area can't support a better show.

They really should just do it in Westchester or LI with nearby Metro North or LIRR access. Much easier for exhibitors to drive in and out of the suburbs, more room, and probably less expensive.

How long have I've been saying big woofers rule?

The Trio15 are actually not that expensive in the overall scheme of things. If you can't afford the Voxactiv, the Tangbang drivers are pretty good for a few hundred bucks. Upgrade to Voxativ later.

I have 2 of the woofers with my Moths and they're excellent. I am thinking of doing two more and recreating the PAPs myself at some point.

Heh, I've been aware for a while but hearing is believing ;). Getting the TangBang first is not a bad idea. I'll likely do that, depending on how my finances are in a few years.

If you are cheap like me or @Serious, go down to the hardware store and buy X2 6" x 2" boards. You can also get away with one 15" woofer if you pass 45Hz and below to a sub.

We should have a meet sometime early next year. It's been about a year since our last one, and I'm sure a lot of us have some new gear to share. Any ideas for hosting? @Josh?

Hey guys, I haven't been super active on this board but I live in midtown and would be down to have beers and listen to stuff. I have Yggdrasil/freya driving a class a/ab triode/ultralinear tube amp, through some big monitors I built using 2 focal kevlar mids and a raven ribbon tweeter per monitor. Velodyne sub for techno/rap/movies. Also happy to potentially host a mini-meet if people are interested. I'd love to hear more headphones, I've really only ever heard my AKG 701s.

People might have to lug some gear an ave, just as a heads up. We unfortunately don't have a garage right under our building. In terms of capacity, we've had parties of greater than 12 folks here, but obviously the sweet spot for 2 channel is considerably smaller. We could seat 8-10 people without it being laughable for sure but we don't have a palace so I don't want to oversell it! Sorry for the delay on response, had two regulatory exams this past week. I would be cool with hooking up whatever people wanted gearwise. I can support balanced or unbalanced, have both usb out and aes via pcie pro audio card. I can also run the amp in pure triode or AB ultralinear. that along w freya's 3 stage options and the Yggdrasil usb5 vs. AES gives us a lot of mix and match options. totally cool also just grabbing drinks. Just wanted to say hello!

That sounds good! I'd just uber over so no worries on the lack of a garage

Hey I'm in the city, any suggestions on some good food places? Would be nice if it was semi near the times square area as that's where my hotel is.
I like most food, good meats, meatball sub, ect. I like meat.

Don't know much around Times Square. Ippudo is good ramen, and Sake Bar Hagi is cool izakaya (given we are in NY, at least). Both should be relatively affordable.

Adding to the japanese trend, you can go to ootoya on 41st for good clean japanese food, then you can go to cafe zaiya for some black sesame ice cream. Also around the corner is royce chocolates, blue bottle coffee, lady M for some mille crepe cakes. Ktown is also near by if you want to try some korean food.

.....japan has arguably one of the best beefs in wagyu beef, and they also have yakitori which is land based meat? also tonkatsu, which is batter fried pork...along with a lot of others. Its not all seafood because everyone screams sushi everytime japan is mentioned.
