    You got me! :)

Were they saying that all along? (If so, I am surprised that I don't remember that.)

Edit: Nevermind. "...this iteration has also been updated with a detachable 6-foot cable..."

I don't remember when it said 6 ft, but it did when I read it (before ordering).

It's been a point of contention since people started receiving them. There was some sort of offer from Massdrop to send a replacement 6 ft cable if you ship them the short cable, but I think this just made people more angry, so they gave up and here we are.

    I guess I missed that.

I was glad to get the short 1/8" plug cable. I am planning on using it to replace the steel cable on my Amperior and trying it out on a portable player. I'm guessing most people do not have a similar plan. :)

Edit: Nice to see Sennheiser listening to their customers.

Just before I saw this update I was looking at some posts over on HF in the 6XX thread. Apparently Axel Grell had offered to replace cables in the Massdrop forum before they made this announcement. It seemed like his offer was very spur-of-the-moment and I'm guessing that many, many people responded so they probably just decided to replace them all. Sounds like they still have to manufacture the 6 foot cords.

    Here's the original post:
    https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-sennheiser-hd6xx/talk/619356
"We will exchange the cable if you need a longer one. As a fast solution I can offer HD 650 cables (length is 9.84 ft.) because we have some of them on stock. The 6 ft. version will take longer as we have to produce them first. I have no confirmation from our cable supplier yet, but I guess it will February or March until we have it.
I am very sorry and I apologize for this.
    Axel Grell “

In true HF style that thread has now turned into everyone posting pictures of their email from Massdrop. Soon they'll be comparing shipping numbers for the cable.

They got the HD6XX for $200 and are complaining about a cable mix-up. Sounds like a bunch of cry-babies to me.

It is a bit.. I wonder if they will be 1/4 inch or 3.5mm terminated. Not complaining, I'll happily accept it either way, though I do have a spare 650 cable, too. I have a fancy schmancy audiobling balanced cable on my 650s, and a balanced to SE adaptor tail for the amps that need it.

(The 6xx are my emergency headphones, packed away, I admit)

"This was a one off product made for Massdrop by Sennheiser. Unfortunately only Massdrop had access to this item so this cannot be swapped for another one unfortunately,"

Was told this by Sennheiser AU/NZ, based on how you interpret it I imagine they either mean it's a limited edition and as such spare parts aren't readily available, or it truly was a one off and there won't be another drop in the future.

HD650 cable is better than HD6XX cable.

Yeah seriously. Did these people not see the bit where they paid $200 for a HD 650? Pearls before swine and all that, I guess.

    I'm very happy for you.

At the beginning of the letter, Axel says, "The cable of the HD 6XX is just 55 inches long, not 6 ft. as announced and described. This is my fault. In the HD 6XX project we were a bit in a hurry. We wanted to be ready before Christmas. As the cable is the part with the longest lead time, I’ve decided to use the existing cable of the HD 650 Groove. I thought it is 6 ft. long, but I have not measured the length."

He should have gone to their HD650 + Groove webpage where it says:

    What's in the box?
    • HD 650 (1,4m cable with 3,5mm plug)
    1.4 meters = 4.6 ft.

But I agree that it's a minor issue to whine about. Massdrop should put a bit of cheese in with the cable when they send it out.

Off topic, but I had a look through the Apogee Groove page again to remind myself of what it is. That pic of the guy wearing HD800s on an airplane still cracks me up.

Guess he got tired of the lack of isolation and eventually switched to Momentum 2s.

Nothing else matters when he is gazing lovingly at his Groove. He snaps back to reality when he is reading the paper.

Yep, pretty sure that is what is going on. :)

It's also an unbelievably implausible situation. He's on the tarmac which means all that stuff would have to be stowed away safely under the seat in front of him (unless he was experiencing some extended refueling or traffic routing delay).

Relatedly, there used to be pictures on the Groove site of the younger guy wearing HD800 backwards in a house, but they have since been replaced with a version where they are worn correctly:

I didn't even notice I got a shorter cable than what was advertised until I got the email from Massdrop. Doesn't matter, I'm using a custom balanced cable anyway.

I looked for it but couldn't find it. Guy looks like a dufus wearing them frontwards or backwards.

Despite having to swallow big customs fees, making it less of a deal, and chase the worst delivery service in the country to make them un-lose the package, I have to admit, I'm pretty whelmed. I do like the colour scheme of the 6xx, and never did intend to use the supplied 3.5mm terminated cable. Essentially, they're slightly cooler-looking 650s, which is hard to argue with.

I am quite impressed with what Massdrop have pulled off here, all else aside. I'm looking forward to hearing the Noble X too, see if they can pull off two for two.
