woooow, whoever changed the title... I think we need to see what this "sound absorber" is before we jump to conclusions.

(sadly, seeing what sennheiser has become in the last half decade, it wouldnt suprise me if this was absurdly priced and a potential mod copy cat)

I am hoping for the best though, axell grell is a good guy

I agree. Changing the title is pretty presumptuous at this point.

Thoughtfulness and concern for a vendor? Doesn't sound like you. Request denied to not jump to conclusions.

The concept is the same. I've heard Sennheiser reps spew BS "HD800 is totally neutral" in my face for years. If the HD800 was totally neutral, then why did they need to do this? Remember guys, we're not losing all of the irreverence of Changstar at SBAF. Besides, I know some people showed Axel HD800 mods.

It's pretty obvious what the changes are when Axel says "absorber" - especially given the simulations from Arnaud and my dissection of the HD800 (measurements of the raw driver included) to confirm Arnaud's simulations that the reflections in the cups were the primary cause of lack of "smooth" treble: http://www.changstar.com/index.php?topic=2208.0

I bet it's a piece of foam much like the HD650 foam covering the HD650's HD800-like metal sheath.

The real question is did they fix the 6kHz driver resonance?

"It [HD800S] has an acoustical absorber like the IE 800". For the IE800 this is described as "damped two chamber absorbers (D2CA)".
Supposedly this is based on a damped volume helmholtz resonator (patent filed 2010), and functions as an acoustical notch filter. It is unknown how this is implemented in the HD800S. On its face, the HD800S acoustical absorber doesn't seem related to headphone mod techniques developed over the last 5 years. That said, the HD800 mod scene may very well have inspired the HD800s revision.

I dunno, sennheiser seemed pretty quite about it. No marketing or anything just kinda slid it under the door.

Usually expensive products like to build the hype train.

Im gonna say reasonably it should be $1999 msrp

    Exactly as OJ said.

I feel "dark" just looking at this thing. Perhaps it's time to stop modding, and find an extra $1k so I can trade my HD800 up.

I have my doubts that will work. The resonator needs a canal or tube to work. The HD800 works in fairly open space.

    hello,

@velvetx i alluded to Mr Speakers as i was under the impression that back in his modified T50RP days Dan was buying the donor cans from Fostex in large enough quantities that they needed to ramp up production. this is why i thought Mr Speakers might have been an influence.

if that is not the case, sorry for my misunderstanding.

If it comes in at or under 2k it will be a fantastic "f**k you" to Audeze and their 4k "flagship."

As Axel Grell says in the video (comparing the HD800S to the HD800): "The sound, it's a little bit better."

I know that I was just pointing out is that Dan from MrSpeakers was not the only person modding the MK2.

Can't wait for uber-high-tech, anechoic-ultra-isolated testing facility, Tuetonic-Fourth-Reich Sennheiser to finally bring rug-liner for the masses. I'll be laughing my ass off when I read reviewers wax poetic about a revolutionary change in headphone audio that has been achieved from $10 of fabric and foam that they paid $800 for, that some of us have been using for years now.
