It was never the conspiracy theory. It was about making outrageous assertions so we could at least get someone to spill the beans. There was already evidence early on that Sennheiser took a different approach from the liner type mod.

Well, it's still a good deal for those who are lazy or unable to do crazy driver modifications themselves. I'll be looking at this can for a while maybe I'll even buy one if the price goes below $1000 for a used pair. Cool idea that mirrors the 600 and 650 I think. It's all down to taste now.

I wonder if it's possible that Sennheiser will allow people to purchase the mod to either install themselves or have your current HD-800 sent out for the mod.

Other thing I don't like is that everything points the the HD-800s being quite a bit more than the 800 because of that stupid balanced cable they are adding ($380 cable added into the price no thank you I will get YFS to do it for less)...

I am perfectly happy with the HD800 sound, but I may buy one of the new HD800S (totally ruins how to spell plural HD800 now) at some point in the future, more likely for my wife than myself lol ...

Unlikely, as the new absorber is built into the driver at production level. You'd have to swap out the drivers to get the exact same thing Sennheiser has done. That doesn't mean we won't come up with some hacked up version of it, but it isn't a modification they can do.

I suspect you are kidding yourself if you think that Jude et. al. care what goes on over here.

That being said, I'd also suspect that the modding in the community was the primary reason behind these changes so perhaps the title still fits.

Why would you ever have to talk about the HD800 in plural? "Hey, look at all my HD800s." :p

If your wife doesn't want it, send it my way will ya? I'm gonna find her number and convince her that she should stay with Apple EarPods.

But, having two cans with only slightly different sound characteristics seems... oh well, it's black and silver, it's different enough.

FWIW, I think you're looking for a cylinder with 0.55" of depth, Marv. That's the 1/4 wavelength at 6kHz.

    I think.

How many people own both HD600 and HD650? Not many, but if you have two people in the house who want to listen to music simultaneously, I suppose having two cans that each fit one person's taste is appropriate :D

Ok so we are going to get a balanced cable ($380) and a reworked driver. Can't see this for less than $2k now :(

The dream would be if this launches at the HD800s current MSRP and bumps that one down a Benjamin or two.

I just cut out some shitty little circles of adhesive backed foam with interior punch outs and placed them on top of the center hole of the driver. I made sure that they had rounded edges and made sure that they didn't extend beyond the plastic bracket piece. Pretty easy to hear where this is going. FR response sounds more linear, even with the garbage mod. Imaging seems unaffected. I guess the next step is to carefully cut out the dust screen on the center hole and begin trying various materials and dimensions.

I completely agree with Marv that the rug liner is still going to be needed in some capacity to keep the otherwise somewhat nebulous imaging in check.

Yeah, that's not the same as what's goin on here. It's a physical tube that goes in between the voice coil.

Jesus, last time I dealt with acoustics was third year physics, don't recall much. I know a 1/4 wavelength pipe would be a resonator, but that's for closed end pipes, not open ones like Sennheiser seems to be utilizing.
