Public records were always available to anyone determined, its just became very easy to access in the digital age. This one is much more interesting:

LOL! Did Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, or Jennifer Aniston search my records? How about any of my ex-girlfriends (honey, in case you are seeing this I have none)?

Nah, I'm not important. It seems my linked-in account was hacked together with like a million others.

When Google was still new there were no regional/country filters in the search engine. Nowadays, there are. I remember those unfiltered searches and well some people should be happy there are now filters in place. For accurate information you have to dig a bit harder these days...

Haha. Try Google searches while in Dubai on various topics such as furries, tranny porn, golden Schlong awards, etc.

    To an American, it's disturbing.

Privacy "rights" are a social construct. Humans don't have rights.

Even if you were able to completely eliminate your online presence and avoid any scams/phishing/hacking, we all voluntarily give out personal information to insurance companies, banks, etc. The information is stored in private secure databases, but anyone who works for those companies can see your personal information (i.e. a lot of people). The system works because 99.9% of people who have access to this information are trustworthy and don't give a shit about stealing your identity. I have to imagine the vast majority of peoples identities aren't worth enough for a criminal to bother.

Just use common sense when online and relax. The illusion of privacy is almost entirely based on trust. Unless you want to live in a bunker and wear a tin foil hat, your private information will be available to somebody.

After having multiple government background investigations for security clearances and then having all that data stolen, I don't have any false sense about personal data security. Wait a minute, isn't there a super squirrel background check here to gain Friend status? I assume the Staff here knows more about me than I do. The key is to be nice to our data overlords ;)

I have had the goverment background investigations (3) and the theft of that info. And whatever (I remember Marv saying something like that) here at SBAF. I might be going through another one after this, just because I didn't think I needed an emoticon. :(

I just checked the site. Apparently my father faked his own death and is living with my ex-brother-in-law. Not kidding. At least that what it shows. I also appear to have suffered several years of memory loss. I lived in an apartment in the 90's and have no memory of it. My wife assured me that I was here in the house. Back to my therapist I guess. I wonder who is actually buried at the cemetery?

I gave up on privacy when they allowed public employee personnel records to be posted online. My salary is embarrassing enough without the whole world knowning. :(

My sister-in-law and her husband are both teachers living in Wisconsin. Seems many people do not highly value teachers and schools up there (at least where they live) and there was a big hoopla a while back about teachers getting paid too much. The local paper set up an easy search for lazy people to search teachers by name and see what they make so they were getting harassed by their own neighbors and whatnot complaining about how much they get paid (which is a little more than average but by no means excessive for people with masters degrees who have been in their job for as long as they have). This information was already public but you actually had to put in a little effort to get it.

Leave it to the local papers to enable lazy witch-hunters.

Yeah I followed that closely. Most people don't realize how many years and additional college units one has to have to get to the top of the salary schedule. Besides, if the money was that great teaching colleges would be packed. And they aren't. I told my co-workers about the site. Some freaked out as not all of their students love them, and really don't want them to have their address. But I guess if you want to really find someone......

There was an article about FamilyTreeNow in the Sacramento Bee today. http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article126534709.html
    They called it creepy.
