I was sending one out and thought to see what effect the Roadrunner has on the Falcon. As a background, Phoenix Engineering for a short time made regulators to control AC motors (the Falcon and the Eagle) and they also made a Tachometer to show measured speed at the platter.

The Falcon works without the Roadrunner, so I just wanted to see how much of a difference it did.

Can you hear wow and flutter at this low level, I'm not sure.

With all the mass and inertia, probably doesn't make a difference.

All this stuff is super tricky and subjective. For example, the VPI tables sound more stable and black to me with the SDS set at 84V or 90V instead of the stock 70V.

Is 'black'er measurable via Platterspeed ? Just curious as to what causes it.

I actually think it kind of is. Sort have need to listen to the 1kHz tone from the test record and follow the line visually. It's sort of a audio and visual feedback thing.

I have to try it then. I missed testing the SDS with the Roadrunner and Platter speed back when I had it. I'll wait for the next one to come in.

    Necro thread revival

I was going to post this in the DIY thread but @bobboxbody will likely update with feedback more relevant to all vinyl nutjobs so I thought I would revive an old topic which aligns with the content.

For those unaware, the "brains" of the roadrunner is available through DIYA , user pyramid is the mastermind behind phoenix engineering.

The short take on this is that I built this motor controller for my LP12 but then found an integrated board that used an arduino to use feedback control to maintain the platter speed and it allowed me to strap it to the underside of the LP12 . Less audiophile but much more practical with less clutter.

@bobboxbody was looking for a controller so I undertook to make it look a little more visually acceptable

and as you can see I am not a huge fan of case work with drilling out and hand filing (I remade that front panel 3 times ) - but this past weekend my son bought me a desktop CNC for my birthday - looking forward to revisiting some older projects and cleaning them up.

This little unit is highly versatile and allows for a ton of adjustment to suite most tables. I added in an arduino based tachyometer as output for real-time speed but it is not essential.
