One of my two kitties came down with cancer of the spleen 5 years ago. The Dr said that the operation was risky but doable and I could expect a couple of more good years with my baby. We went ahead with the surgery and she's still with us; happy and healthy. She moves a bit slower now, but she is 17, of course.

Sorry to hear it @Colgin. These decisions are never easy. If it were me, I would try the surgery if there was a decent chance she'd make it through and have a life of quality for a few more years. If it didn't look like the odds were good, I'd probably choose to say goodbye. Let me know if there's anything I can do.

@Colgin - So sorry to hear about your little girl! I ran her case specifics by my wife who is a vet (who does a bunch of surgery). Her opinion (based on the facts laid out here, which is clearly not what she'd get professionally, but she felt was enough to share some thoughts) is that she would not put a 19 yo cat with CRF under general anesthetic. Fixing the leg with pins or doing an amputation would both require putting the cat all the way under for a significant period of time, and that's a significant risk for any 19 yo old, let alone one with CRF. She would prefer to put it under a local and set and cast the leg and see how she does. Her gold standard is whether a cat is eating (and the other things that go along with eating!) as if it is really feeling bad or in a lot of pain they tend not to eat. It's a good standard for rating QOL (quality of life). From there you see how she does. Same with the lung issue, as any surgery would carry the same risks. Hope this helps and that she feels better! Cheers

Thanks for all the kind replies. After discussing with the surgeon this morning as well as
Our regular vet, the decision was clear that it was time to say goodbye. Too many risk factors for surgery/recovery and too many independently terminal conditions. In all likelihood her leg broke because of cancer in the bone and comparing earlier x-rays the mass in her lung had grown. But for the accident she might have had several more good weeks, but her time was drawing near regardless.

Fortunately she was not in pain (fentanyl would make any of us feel good) and she was in good spirits with a good appetite until the end. The whole family came to say goodbye and we gave her a last meal of fresh turkey from the deli which she devoured. My son said good bye and left. My wife and I then stayed with her while the vet put her to sleep. Very sad now but we knew we were doing the right thing for her. And now she can join Freedy, her lifetime companion (and nemesis) in their shared plot. Thanks again for all the kind thoughts.

@Colgin - My sincerest condolences on her passing. Knowing it was the right thing to do helps, but it never takes all of the pain and ache away (have been there a number of times). I'll raise a glass tonight in her memory and hope you and your family are as well as can be. Cheers to the fuzzy creatures that give us so much love

My condolences. She had a great life filled with love, food, and warm places to nap. That's better than most people get.

My condolences, she reached an age of 92 in human years, which is no small feat.

So sorry to hear it @Colgin . I know that it was a difficult decision but I honestly felt that you did the right thing. But damn it's hard, very hard to let go. It's very evident from you posts that you loved and cared for her very well.

A few days after I lost my old Jack dog, a little bird with a green chest started showing up on the porch, every morning. On mornings that I was out on the porch he would land right on the chair I was sitting in. On a few mornings he even landed on me. I put bread out for him and the other birds. And then one day he didn't show up any more. Take this for what it's worth, but it made me feel a little better about loosing Jack.

Very sorry to hear @Colgin it's never something that's easy to go through. Sounds like she lived a very long happy life though so just try to remember the good times.

@Colgin - my condolences for the great transition of your furry companion. No matter how prepared we think we are, it is never easy for anyone. May her memory never fade.

Sorry I missed this earlier. Shedding a tear for you.

Somehow, I never had to make that decision: nature has, so far, taken it out of my hands. A few months ago, had a dreadfully injured cat. Vet stitched him together, but it all came apart and we knew he could not survive. Told the vet I'd sleep on it, although we both knew what the decision would be. Wife woke me with the news that he died in the night. In the circumstances, it could not have been better news. Sounds weird to say, but I think people will understand.

Damn. Shedding tears for us both now...

Condolences to everyone who has lost a pet recently.

Still getting over the loss of my 23 year old buddy, Maxx the cat.
No other pet can ever replace him in my heart.
We humans have a lot of love to give though, so there's a new fuzzball inbound.

My little kitten, Marcel (who was born around the time Maxx died).
He's a chartreux breed. His mom is behind him in the second pic.
His eyes will eventually get dark orange like hers.

Hey, I'm Sir Pinecone's other mom. He's "our" blob of a son.

And whomever thought of renaming the girls Tegan and Sara must have been a genius.
