Yeah, I was stoked when I found them. Bought off a guy in Monterey, CA. At the time, he had 5-6 sets of old school JBLs (along with a ton of other gear), all pristine. He was one cool dude...

There's a vintage audio shop in Indy selling a pair of the L-88 versions for $899. Regular ones already sold.

It really is. They have some absolutely amazing gear there, and they fully restore vintage amplifiers (hence their name Getchell Amplifiers).

    Nice!

IMO for quality, full-bodied warm sound, it’s hard to beat mid-70s HiFi.

Edit: In respect to sound and value/$$$ spent.

I recently upgraded the phono on my Sphinx to a graham slee and found it to be worthwhile. I swapped the tubes for some mullards on upscale audio and it fleshed out the bass a little more also. I’d do the tubes before the phono though.

Damn, love how that looks. The up-firing woofers are very cool. Any details on the system components? How do you like the sound?

satelites are vifa xt25tg30 / wavecor wf132tu01 combo. There is a nasty resonance at 1,2 khz in CSD, but I can't hear it, so I just EQ'd it 2 db down. One 5cm diameter port. Goes from 60 Hz to 17khz, vifa is amazing, 5k + is perfect, also measures really nice from 60 to 1000 Hz too, 1 khz to 5 khz is a bit wobbly-bobbly area, these analog crossovers don't help either. I'll go full digital 3-way soon, maybe even 4 way, add another box for the 1-5 khz area, something flat and nice.
The big guns are for a new project I'm working, currently just complimenting the satelites. Dayton DCS 385 boxes, can post specifics if you want. with LR sub bass EQ they go down to 20. Flat.

    Yeah, sr-L700 :D

Srm-313 from old srs-303 system. Sr-303 had some damping foam that went to shit but the amp is still good.

Very nice. Your listening space is almost as much like a cupboard as mine!

Yeah well what can you do about it :D
Jazz small groups etc sounds quite ok like they play in the room which is just fine. For gaming it's fine. For orchestral music it sucks big time, but I'm planning to build dipoles for that later, so we'll see

Are those front speakers angled or do you sit in high chairs to listen/watch?

The speakers aren't angled but, you just gave me an idea for some Auralex pads I have lying around. Anyway, the couch sits a little higher than most. If you sit properly then the tweeters are roughly around ear level. If you slouch that's a different story. :) I would prefer to drop the front a few inches cause I slouch like a mofo after a long days work. :D

Pics of my in-progress speaker system. The cabinets are 121-liter DIY jobs loaded with Eminence 12CX + Eminence APT-50 drivers (crossover via MiniDSP DDRC24 and bi-amped via Crown X1000 and JLH69 amps). These cabinets will be joined by some 300Hz Edgarhorn midrange units with FaitalPRO M5N8-80 drivers and another pair of APT-50's in a tractrix tweeter horn after I'm done building the Edgarhorns. At that point, it will be a "convertible" system: 2-way coaxial, or 3-way via the horns and the 12CX.

Yeah, I know it's kind of bonkers to set something like this up in a nearfield configuration, but whaddyagonnado? Housing ain't easy to find around here. :)

Point them the other way and sit in the garden? Which looks as great as your speakers do (looking forward to those horns), especially with the the kitten guards.

My listening space is about the same amount of room people use for toilets in the space under the stairs. One of the biggest systems I ever heard, built from ex-cinema drivers by its owner, sounded, against all odds, fantastic in the only small space that its builder/owner had available for it.

I'm a big fan of nearfield listening, the intimacy of headphones with the benefits of speakers. Easier to get a smooth response from 100hz and up and the low end can be fixed with subs.

In my setup i have a bit of a dip at 95hz that is only really noticeable with a sinesweep. Using only one sub centered between the monitors. Crossed over at 60hz, if i don't i keep it centered i can locate it. It's a bit of a shit sub though but low xover and centered it works good enough for now.
