I got the Pro-ject Puck It 2 weeks ago, and find a small difference in separation and the bass felt a tad cleaner - but I felt like its not as big a difference as I would have imagined it to be. I think I'd have to give it another listen when my Sola LPS turns up to upgrade my TC750, since that seems like a bottleneck here. And my amp, and my room, but lets not change things I cant do anything about right now :p

In the meanwhile, since I did hear some differences I wanted to see if I could somehow see them on a measurement. I dont have a recording interface for my computer so I just took a UMIK-1 and placed it in my room, played the same minute or so of a couple songs and recorded it. Put it in a waveform/spectral analyser to see if something shows up and it did (only really visible in the waveform, not so much in the spectogram).

For reference, the top waveform is without the puck, the bottom is with.
**Disclaimer: I'm not sure how useful this is, but i'm posting because someone else might see something here that I didnt**

    Song 1:

I messed up here a tiny bit with making both recordings line up exactly, but you can see some differences. At the 7 second mark for example, but I couldnt hear what i'd expect to be some sort of fluttering volume when I played the same part back. But I was happy to see some potential improvement that I thought maybe due to flattening the record against the platter.

    Song 2:

Got the timing between recordings right here, and you see a similar change with the puck here.

I didnt bother throwing the spectogram here, since theres really not much to see there between the two setups.

At the end, I'm a bit bummed because I was hoping to see something in the Spectogram to show a difference in the bass maybe, but I guess it could be down to the fact that the puck just holds the record down better for the needle so theres less vertical movement when theres some warp.

If anyone has an idea how I can do this better next time, please do tell! I intend to try something like this again when my LPS comes in..

The amp has arrived, it sounds amazing and integrates into my system perfectly. Pretty amazed by it, and it should call for the rack reveal!

It's still pretty bare but there is plenty of room for additions, namely a new dac and phono stage in coming months.

This arrived today in the mail from Germany...
    IMG_0234.jpg
    I bought the Walnut model
    IMG_0235.jpg
7 double rows of carbon fiber bristles
    IMG_0236.jpg
much larger than my Hunt brush
    IMG_0238.jpg
    IMG_0237.jpg
Leaves less dust behind than the Hunt. Easier to gently scoop up the last bit that sometimes the Hunt will leave behind, and require another pass or two.

The manual states the metal sides help discharge static through your body as you brush the record.

47 Euro's shipped from Germany may be a little on the pricey side, but not totally unreasonable.

EDIT: Update, out of the box the bristes felt a little stiff, and the manual says it may take a week to soften up. Already today they're softening up nicely :)

I came over to bug @brencho for coffee (and just for coffee ;) ), and was lucky enough to bear witness to his super clean and ergonomic setup!

Man, this was an inspiration. I don't think I've seen so many setups that are that clean. It sounded good but brencho said he'd like to tune it more, so... we'll see. Hopefully he can keep things clean still. :)

Wow thanks for that amazing picture Bill! "You're a wizard harry..."

Come over for coffee anytime my friend. And keep bringing those sweet mods and franken-phones so we can listen to them!

"Clean" is my middle name Bill! (despite the beard and disheveled appearance -- i blame my young kid but its really just me). Hoping to tune it more with tubes, placement, cartridge, etc. Looking forward to @shaizada's visit and his little bag of unicorn dust aka wisdom ;) LOL

We are so fortunate to have such amazing people that are 1) super friendly and generous and 2) have such great audio wisdom and experience! I can't emphasize this enough nor take it lightly. I feel like I was choppered up a mountain and gently deposited at its summit. Not to mention the money I've saved over the long run (even though i'm still hurting from the chopper ride up a mountain).

Apropos of nothing, but yesterday was the most "sbaf" day I've ever experienced. @Wfojas was over to listen to some stuff (BADA vs Aries showdown) and teach me some things (Thanks Willy!), then as he left @Bill-P arrived, and while Bill was over, @bazelio called and after I hung up the phone shaizada texted. What?!? Just awesome.

@jexby hahaha it's a room that a 1.5 year old frequents! It's probably just bill's photography witchcraft. Mjolnir2 is working out nicely.

Finally built myself a rack out of IKEA "Lack" tables. Had the idea in my head for the longest time, but never got to building it until now. Still a work in progress, but so far, spent less than $100 (4 tables, Capita legs, bamboo cutting boards for some isolation). Next step is to fill the legs with sand and putting spikes or sorbothane between the levels.

Total estimated cost will be around $150. So far, very happy with the results.

It's been a good week. I finished school forever, got the Vincent loaner, completed my rack pictured above (filling the legs with sand made it feel super solid), and last but not least, got myself a new cartridge, the Ortofon OM30.

It sure is silly having a cart worth more than your entry level table, but I found it for a price I couldn't say no to. It also came with a SuperOM body, but I'll work on installing that in the future. In the meantime, I simply swapped the stylus.

It sounds beautiful! Much more refined than the OM5e; greater extension in the extremes, more ethereal and detailed, bass tightened up substantially, soundstage opened up a good amount. I'm glad I had the Vincent on loan, and will be extremely sad to let it go! Its resolving capabilities did the stylus upgrade much justice.

... now what to do about my modded TCC-750?

I really like the modded TCC-750, but snagged the RSA Nighthawk off the bat. My friend replaced his modded 750 with one of the Tavish amps. I haven't listened to it enough to make and judgements, but initial impressions seemed good.

Another one could be the Sutherland PH3D, which I believe there's one for sale on here.

Maybe a phono pre would be a good loaner option for us. With something like the RSA or Sutherland making a round. Heck, maybe it would be good for the group to get acquainted with a Tavish, and with the lead time on them, I'm sure selling again pretty easily.

The Sutherland KC Vibe might be an interesting comparison to the Nighthawk. Looks like it just came out recently to replace the PH3D.

@Pyruvate if I was you I would wait a little for the Lounge Audio tube pre. They're wrapping up pre-production and it's supposed to go up for sale at the end of the month for $399.

I was impressed by their SS offering so I'm excited to see what they can do with a tube stage.

@Pyruvate congratulations on your graduation! For the TCC-750, I would get the SOLAHD PS for cheap and try that out, there is no soldering needed and I feel that is the biggest upgrade. I think until you go for the big boy upgrade on the TT, the fully modded TCC-750 is probably the best phono-pre.

    Hey,

This is bit of an odd question but can any of you TT mavens suggest a basic table that can be managed by someone who is only partially sighted -- something unfussy with a fixed base and fit n' forget settings that also sounds good? The rest of the system is pretty accessible but the TT has proven tricky, and I've been out of the game for long enough that my last deck was a Well-Tempered (great-sounding but finicky, with its dental-floss and silicone arm arrange, int). Thanks in advance for any suggestions and sorry to go OT -- didn't want to start a new thread.

Just a place to remember my trusty turntable Tonto who's found another home.

I bet you no one under 45 can guess why I called it Tonto.
