Well I went a few pages back and someone opined it will come with "TRS→male XLR" adapter so one could just plug it into the DAC straight if the gender is correct.

    Edit: Ok found the quote

We will be supplying the adapter with each board.

    Cheers,

One header is so we could monitor the I2S bus. The other is so you can connect to the analog output with external panel mounted jacks. Makes it easier to mount this in a case.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Looks like more boards are up for grabs. Thanks for the discount and very reasonable shipping costs!
Pretty exciting to have been able to follow up on the design and development here before buying the finished product.
I'll be testing this against my slightly modded Mac Mini 2014 -> Regen -> irDAC (USB) combo.

Thanks @Miggie78 for the heads up! Was bummed that I missed out on the first batch.

Just remember guys, 20 more coming by the end of the month. Depending upon how fast those go, we will probably place a large order as soon as possible from our CM. Up to 100 or so is doable on our in-house small machine. But, I feel pretty confident that this board will do well out in the marketplace.

Thanks to everyone for all the great suggestions and ideas, and of course, the orders!

    Cheers,
    Michael

Interesting, sure sounds like you found it! Do you think there was anything from the analog section leaking back into the digital, possibly affecting it's (digital) performance? Maybe it will measure *even* better now? Congrats on launching the board!

The i2s "test" header is one of my favorite features :p

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the digital got even better! But I don't think so. What I am seeing on the analyzer for the digital section now is very similar, if not identical, to what I saw before. When I measure for the digital it is not so much the artifacts of the 1 kHz signal I look for, it is the jitter and bit errors, and we get 0 bit errors and ~1ns jitter).

    Cheers,
    Michael

Looking forward to receiving the 502 Dac. I'm planning on purchasing a 5v linear power supply. Should I just be powering the 502 / Raspberry with one power supply or is there a way to power both the Raspberry Pi and 502 using two 5v power supplies? Wasn't sure.
Looking to get the best sound out of it.
    Thanks!

That's probably true, the use case on sbaf seems almost exclusively as a transport to a dedicated dac. In audiophile circles that's the aspect that I'd stress the most and then for more general audiences maybe talk about how it can grow with your gear - the built-in dac now and something better down the road.
There's a jumper you can remove that lets you power the Pi and hat seperately but the low hanging fruit will be taken care of by powering the hat with clean power and leaving the jumper installed so the Pi gets powered as well. You can probably get most of the way there with the iFi power thing.

I finally ordered a case to consolidate everything, I ended up getting a fanless mini-itx case (hdplex h1.s) which is admittedly overkill but it looks nice, has no forward facing leds, and would probably do double duty as a semi-deadly weapon if I ever needed to fend off a burglar or whatever. I cracked my lpsu case open and it seems like it should all fit though obviously it'll need some finesse / blunt force. I'll make sure to do a more detailed write up of the accumulated parts before the grand unification though just in case it all goes bad.

I'd say the biggest feature missing that will deter the average consumer from purchasing one is there is not a way (that I know of, at least) to output audio from one's "standard" pc. Of course, the audio quality is great, and the setup is pretty seamless using upnp, but at least one of my qualms is that I cannot use it with Netflix, gaming, etc. I know this is an issue inherit to streaming audio to the pi in general, but that's just my two cents. Anyways, the thing sounds amazing! Also, I tried putting various materials on the clocks and other places on the pcb, to no avail. The sound was slightly muted, but still audible. Of course, I don't notice it in normal listening as I have it in another room. Surely with a case the sound would be non-existant. (However, you said you may have fixed it, so it could be a complete non-issue.)

If you enable airplay on the Pi you can use that to output any audio though I haven't tried it with anything but music so I don't know what the lag is like. On the Mac and iOS devices you can just choose it as a sound output device, on Windows you need extra software like TuneBlade (which I haven't tried caveat emptor).

Guys, a quick update. We are digging out from the snowstorm, we did lose power in our building. So we've been delayed a day or two in doing the final test and ship. We should still start shipping no later than Friday with everything wrapped up by Monday.

As you guys could tell we sold out of the 20 pretty quickly, but we will fast track another 10. So check on the store today or tomorrow and those if you didn't get one should still be able to get one.

For those of you that have a Proto unit that has the noticeable whine, please contact me directly and we will get you a unit because I want to make sure that is truly gone. And clearly some folks are more sensitive to this issue than others.

On the subject of contacting me, it is much better to send me an email. My email address is:

    [email protected]

The forum messaging system does not give me notices all the time, and besides it is clunky to have to log into the system from my phone browser in order to answer messages. So if you have a message up there that is still urgent please send me an email. And I apologize if my lack of response caused any issues for you.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Hi Scoot, so the noise you heard before has gone with this new board?
BTW, I missed the on-line flash-sale, will watch the next batch available, lol.
