RoPieee - display/touch screen for Roon zones‘

Since moving from LMS and Squeezeboxen to Roon a couple of years ago, the one remaining thing I missed about the Squeezebox Touch was the tidy "now playing" display that was part of the unit. Well, it's now possible to have the same thing with Roon using a Linux build called RoPieee (even better in fact as the display doesn't even need to be physically attached to the relevant Roon end point).



RoPieee now has support for the official Raspberry Pi 7" touchscreen and Roon. You load the turnkey RoPieee image to a Raspberry Pi (attached to the back of the screen), fire up a local web page for some basic config, enable the extension in Roon and you're good to go. The screen can be linked to any Roon zone, meaning you could have it across the room (or the house) from the actual player if you wanted.

You can also use the attached RPi as an endpoint, along with a HAT (this is how I'm running mine for now, until another RPi arrives). The touchscreen has basic fwd/rev, play/pause, repeat/random functionality (no database navigation).

So far this looks to be an excellent solution, and pretty damn cheap - £60 for the screen, plus a RPi + psu if you don't already have one. RoPieee is free, though the author is accepting donations (I'll be sending something his way as it's totally worth it). There are a number of cases out there (you need one). I read up and ended up getting this one, which works well and looks decent.

I'm dead chuffed with it, and will be getting a couple more for other rooms in the house. There's also lots of chatter on the Roon forums if you want to know more.
