Yup I listen to music, however I actually would like to know as well, because I'm curious :). Similar to why we measure headphones as well as listen to them.

The real question is this: What sounds better, Gen 5 card or Eitr?

WTH is wrong with you people? Why do simple questions need to be phrased in such roundabout ways concerning i2s, SPDIF, magic, Thor's hammer, wormholes, rainbow bridges, etc.? I do have a Gen 5 Yggdrasil, but not an Eitr so I cannot answer this. I have heard two things from people I trust: Eitr is better. Eitr is the same the Gen 5 board. Maybe we should establish what sounds better or how they sound different before theorycrafting?

BTW, above post disliked in the context of keeping noise down (just discussed in a prior post) and that measurements (something are not the same thing as theorycrafting.

    @Cappy, @khragon

Dig a bit in the thread, this has been answered already anyway! And yet another discussion about spdif cables, ugh... need to kill those right away! :D

I've always bought Monoprice cables but I prob won't anymore due to the really tight clamp. I previously said in the past that it wasn't a problem but it feels like I'm about to break the connectors every time I'm connecting or disconnecting them to poor little Modi Multibit and Vali 2. So, yes. Go with Blue Jeans over Monoprice because I believe Blue Jeans specifically uses connectors that make a good connection without the excess friction. Not wanting to add noise but I've seen a few Monoprice recs in this thread and those recs could lead to wrecks IMO.

If it fits too tightly, you can make small adjustments to the plug with needle pliers.

Above post disliked for being a bit too far off-topic. And no, I don't have the time to tweak every fricking cable with pliers. Life is too short. That three minutes could make me miss the ride on @Torq's boat. You know, the one where we get to lather soapy suds on boobies to appease the gods.

Alright, I'll go read through the posts to see if I can find the answer. I'm surprised so much resistance on this technical question though, given how much acceptance there is with headphones measurement. I would think making the connection between implementation and listening observations would be more more welcome here, because it the only way of keeping the manufacture honest. No more noise here from me.

The Mr. Spock in me says this does not compute. Let's say the CMedia USB receiver does indeed output Hokkien, a strange interface language that even @HitmanFluffy does not understand except for a few error codes. How does this make Schiit dishonest?

I just ran Eitr that had already been performing at 'beyond expectation' level with 4 AA pencil cells and it took the performance to next level. I like to say YMMV but it is most likely that whoever tries, will listen a difference. More dark of a background brings in more depth to the sound stage.

It's more likely that whomever tries this is a colossal twat and will not only experience "more dark of a background" but no sound at all.

You don't get a prize for guessing why.

Well, in theory this should work. This would be supplying DC (instead of AC) to the rectifier bridge (making assumptions here on the PS in the Eitr). The voltages would be different though. Might not be enough voltage from DC. 6VAC will be about 8.46VDC after the bridge. In reality probably a bit less than that with losses and cap smoothing. So 4x1.5V = 6V might not be enough. Someone let me know if I am doing the calculations wrong or overthinking it. Just ate big Indo/Paki meal for lunch so brain coma.

I don't know any other details of the PS ciruit in the Eitr, so by no means an endorsement. Best way is to bypass the bridge.

Unless the delicious redhead* I had for lunch** is unduly affecting my capacity to do math ... and/or I'm missing something ... and/or my general crankiness over people's unfailing need to constantly overthink*** what should be a music centric hobby, not a fap-fest over the potential notion that "noise" (which is all you might stand to eliminate in this case) on the input side of a digital device, that's already electrically isolated, somehow magically results in "more of a dark background" (as opposed to any of several possible noise-induced artifacts), wait were was I?

Wouldn't you'd be at 4.6v, assuming a perfect circuit (no other losses), due to the (nominal 0.7v each) forward voltage drop across the two diodes that would be conducting with a DC input?

Marv's slightly off. Depends on diode drop. It's (VAC * 1.414) - ~1.4V assuming bridged. So assuming 7.084V in a perfect world.

Taking transmission line antenna theory and applying it to the length of a cable used to transmit spdif packets does not make sense to many. I tried to comprehend the math and wavelengths and such. But in the end I do not think it matters nearly as much as how well the wire is suited for the bandwidth we are talking about or the shielding we most likely need in our environments. And yes I have tried 1.5 meter vs 1 meter of the exact same cable. Tastes the same to me :), like Chicken!

Transmission line theory is a real thing but the convoluted way capacitance and inductance interacts blows my mind. I can understand it just enough to grasp it's a complex problem (and applies at every level, board level and IC level), but I defer to much smarter peers to grasp this. On the flip side I can understand when someone is trying to sell me Himalayan yak hair braided cables, metals mined from the depths of Moria, 50 monks hand applying coats of quantizion immune wax as they hand select only the finest honeycombs, etc.

Listening to music wins over listening to cables or other gear.

Either way on the batteries, probably best to add a few more 1.5V batteries. To account for the fact that 6VAC translates into more DC, and batteries getting weak... after a few hours given the nominal 2.5W suckage of the Eitr.

I'd say go for 5 or 6 D batteries. There are regulators after the bridge, so going a little over wouldn't hurt. Of course if Schiit gets the Eitr back with scorch marks on the regulators, not their problem.

And while we are at this, throw everything in a jewel encrusted high mass case. Put a fake Krell or Berkeley Audio Design badge on it.

And then there will be whole threads on the best batteries... those with the blackest blacks that deliver current more uniformly. For the nervousa types, it never ends. :p

If we really go there they will be re-wrapping their batteries too, a whole new industry!
