@Fapman If you would consider a DAC/AMP combo you could get a Gungnir MB / Mjolnir2 stack for €2339 from one of the European Schiit distributors.
(+ PYST Interconnects...or perhaps Gotham XLR's if u want to spend a little bit more..)
Or go for the Bifrost MB if you want to save half of the DAC cost.

I would at least consider trying this before jumping on the Sennheiser unit...

Or RME ADI-2 Pro if you want a smaller one box setup.

I can see why the HDV 820 appeals to buyers who plan to use it exclusively with the HD 800 S headphones. The HDV 820 takes the guesswork out of selecting a DAC and amplifier and it is well designed-- some owners may not want the unsightly clutter of having a DAC, amp, and interconnects from different manufactures. And if those are the owner's goals, I would be hard pressed to think of anything more ideal than the HDV 820.

Thank you for your recomendations. I will consider them
    I never said that.

I said that the synergy between HDVD 800 and HD800 at the time of release was unmatched.(HDVD 800 fixed the peak on the classical and otherwise the synergy with AMP-part and HD800 was good) Now after 5 years the playground has come more growded.

And i have strong believe on Sennheiser. Yes, some of their products that they have released in the last couple of years has been "questionable". But still, they know what they are doing and they are designing this product for HD800S. (To my knowledge at least). So its worth to wait and see.

And its worth mentioning that when the HD800S got released. Many people did question the choise that they

E: Okay sorry to say "unmatched" (strong word in here). Lets just say "excellent" or "outstanding". Pretty good NTL.

    Pretty much sums it up.

    From Tyll:
"In my view, Sennheiser is the world's best headphone maker. Sure, they can screw it up from time to time—the HD 700 was a screeching banshee, and their "Bionetic" offerings many years ago were an awful follow up to gains made with the HD 560 at the time. But they also make an astonishing array of headphones with solid performance, and have an extraordinary ability to cover and move forward their lines of headphones in virtually every category."

I wish Sennheiser would update the HDVA 600 as well, don't care for the built in DAC of HDV800/820. Barely any great solid state amps for HD800/S out there.

Luckily, that isn't offtopic much. Otherwise it would be trolling...

Finding quotes to support your love for Sennheiser is equally silly as living in the desert instead of leaving or smoothtalking the nagging wife. But you knew that.
    Carry on.

That's the 800(S)'s problem, not the amps. Stock it's unlistenable so SDR nod it and it becomes listenable on almost anything.

According to a Sony dealer I met at a meet, the 4.4mm connector has the same contact surface area as an XLR, so is a "lossless" (for lack of a better term) portable balanced connector.

On untreated HD800's the peak is there with ALL music. See -

To my knowledge there is no amp that has 8dB less gain around 6-11kHz. With high Zout amps you'll have more gain around the resonant frequency of the headphone which for HD800 happens to be around 100Hz. Hence high Zout makes HD800's more U shaped and (gasp!) consumer friendly.

Why even have mini-jacks on desktop gear? I have had only one full-size 6.3mm sized instrument cable jack break on me on my life and that was on a guitar that saw tons of abuse. I have seen 3.5mm Jacks break on portable gear all the time. I have never had an XLR break on me either.

A 1/4 inch and a 4pin XLR are the only outputs a balanced headphone amp needs. Need 3.5? Buy an adapter. 2X 1/4 is sorta stupid. So is dual 3pin XLR. Keep it simple.
