After reading his post one more time I'm not sure he meant to come off as condescending, or that he necessarily has that personality. I think he just wrote it that way... or that it just came out that way. But he definitely didn't know the lay of the land and stumbled straight into the proverbial beehive. I get the feeling that after eating his fill of humble pie and lurking a bit he might have been fine, but whatever.

    Cred to @MuppetFace for trying.

And that poster by @%20 Oddity was damn funny either way. I hope even Sofa King could see the humor in that one.

I've definitely made that mistake before. Sometimes trying too hard to present oneself and make a meaningful impression (i.e. start off on the right foot) can lead one to come off as arrogant or self-important. I mean, when you're looking closely at yourself and trying to pick the parts you think will be of significance to a new group of people, especially one you're enthused to be a part of, it's easy to miss the parts of yourself that people are actually seeing via how you choose to go about things. People just get carried away when trying to cast themselves in the best light possible, perhaps even with good intentions in mind. It can be frustrating when it isn't as well-received as one had hoped.

I've also had the experience of being so entrenched in hashing out my own point of view that I worded what I meant to present as my own opinions in a way that came off really matter-of-factly. Truly, I hadn't intended to make it seem like I thought I had the final say on the subject and really didn't feel too strongly about what I was saying... ...just too much tunnel vision to see how far I had gone. I honed in too much on what I was trying to get across.

Someone called me out on it, thinking I was trying to cop an attitude with everyone else involved. They were angry and insulted. I was surprised - I hadn't seen the harm in what I was saying. My initial reaction was to be offended, but ultimately I realized that what I actually said and what I meant weren't in line - I had overthought it and completely overshot what I was trying to say. So instead of getting upset, I chose not to question those who strongly felt I overstepped. I apologized, clarified my intentions, and restated what I meant to say before in simpler terms, keeping the criticism I had gotten in mind.

And you know what happened then? They respected it, thanked me for apologizing, and the discussion marched forward peacefully. We reached an understanding. It was easy.

Moral of the story: don't take that shit too personally - don't get too invested in what you're trying to get across. Be patient in expressing yourself. You can't protect your ego from everything. Sometimes people are going to come at you for reasons that may not be clear to you. That means it's time to stop and look around. There are risks to overtightening that subjective lens. It shows you interactions as only you will see them.

The initial stuff was not bad, I don't think... ...easy mistakes to make. But the reaction further down was where he really went wrong. When you misread a room, changing your approach is generally a good idea. The irony of him saying he can pick up on what people mean vs what they say and then failing to give his own words the same scrutiny was lost on him. The benefit of the doubt goes both ways, yanno?

Very good points. The 'talk first listen last' type attitude Sofa King so openly ascribed to clearly does not fit in well with SBAF culture. It tends to cause more harm than good both throughout life and in internet forums. :D

Reminds me of a burger joint in Chattanooga called Sofa King.

"We're not just good, we're Sofa King good. We're Sofa King good you're not going to believe it."

(except that the burger joint truly is Sofa King good.)

Man is that guy even for real? He said that he has a degree of psychology, but I am not so sure about that. Surely he would realize that his post contains a high degree of egoism?

I'm just going to ask, is the guy pictured in the meme famous or infamous for something?

I can see why the guy can be seen as coming across as condescending (like check out the pot of gold at the end of the mesmerizing rainbow created as I take a leak all over everyone and everything), but I can put it down to precociousness too. Usually obtuse, but more often than not, will find their stride. Whatever it is, the dude definitely had something to say, and I do like directness when in context. I keep thinking of that quote from Lincoln (the movie) about running into the marsh...
A GOOD hazing, imo, is something that can be laughed at looking back...

Somebody please clue me in, as either I missed a post about it, or again playing catch up with cultural references after coming out of my periodic hibernations. I just found out what "fleek" meant...I'm trying to bring back gams back into the fold myself...

Psychology is a dump degree stream, where people often go into it because it's perceived as being 'easy' and makes for an acceptable 'don't know what I'm doing!' choice.

I speak from experience, by the way. During my four years as a Psyc major I felt like probably half the class was using it as a stepping stone into either law or med school, another quarter were people taking it as 'that easy but still kinda interesting option', and the remaining quarter split between people actually taking psychology out of interest in the field (Whether or not they wanted to actually pursue psychology-related fields as a career).

Failing out of Electrical Engineering, and then taking multiple degrees in Liberal Arts and Psychology do not lead me to believe that the OP was genuinely interested in the field, but rather took it because it's actually an impressive feat if you manage to fail out of Psychology and they needed the self esteem boost.

Naturally, it seems they failed to take anything to heart out of their Psyc degree, as it seems they have fallen prone to the Biases bias (aka, the Biases blindspot), where one believes themselves to be less biased than the average person, and the Dunning-Kruger effect, where slight knowledge in a field makes people over-estimate their actual competency.

Though, I feel like this thread has mostly turned into beating a dead horse at this point.
