I've been almost exclusively Soylent 2.0 for about a month. Occasionally I'll go to a movie and have popcorn, but that's about it for solid food.

Anyone else on this stuff? I really like Coffiest and original, but Nectar tastes like furniture polish smells. Very Lemon Pledge. Not a fan of the powdered variant... 1.7 tastes like (I imagine) wallpaper paste. I haven't tried the new 1.8.

I was a backer of the original crowdfunding campaign for it. It took forever to get any and when I did, it tasted like wet cardboard smells and upset my stomach horribly. I sold all but the doses I had used and that money ended up funding the engagement ring I proposed to my wife with, so I guess it was good for something. :)

Yeah, the powder is gross. The bottled stuff doesn't seem like it's even from the same company. It's so good.

At the time there was no bottled stuff, I didn't even know they had branched out to that.

I'd say Soylent makes up about half of my caloric intake at this point. I almost always have it for breakfast, some lunches, and uncommonly dinners.

They had some issues with earlier iterations, and in specific recently their 1.7 powered recipe, due to use of algae based products. Turns out algae isn't something most people eat in, and a decent number of folks were allergic to it without knowing before trying Soylent. Their 1.8 switched off of it iirc.

I don't mind the taste of 1.7, especially compared to 1.0 or 1.1. Using filtered water (like ran through a britta filter) helps a lot with the taste, too, and you have to experiment with the dilution a fair bit. Mixes well with coffee on its own in a 1:1 ratio of soylent liquid to coffee.

I miss real food every second of every day. But, I just drink this stuff. It works better for my digestive system, and it's an easy way to count calories and get all the nutrition I need...

I gave up red meat a year ago and chicken around Christmas... there wasn't much left that tasted good, so I figured why not.

iirc it's something like $8 a day ($5.50 in USD) if you lived off of nothing but Soylent. Definitely not the cheapest, but still cheaper than picking up food on the go.

It's mostly a cost/convenience thing for me personally. Nutrition profile in Soylent isn't perfect, but it's better than what I can cook up for breakfast only having access to a microwave (since the kitchen in the apartment's common room is usually fully occupied between 6am and 9am), and it saves me having to make a bag lunch most days as well.

Dinners I'll either have Soylent again (if I'm super lazy/busy with stuff), or I'll actually cook myself a nice dinner. Dinner's my splurge meal where I bring out all the spices.

What would be the gag? The name? Soylent Green is all I could think of when I first heard of it...

The short answer is that the guy who invented soylent is an autistic shithead. He has no training in nutrition and has a child's faith in science without an adult's understanding of what science is and how research can be evaluated.

His formulas tend to be poorly reviewed by nutritionists because he isn't capable of understanding what may be missing from his formulas.

The brief answer is: Don't f'ing live on soylent. There are already much better products out there and have been for years. Buy one of those, replace no more than one (1) meal a day with it and eat varied, nutritious meals based around a variety of vegetables, whole grains and lean protein sources. Consult a trained nutritionist for a meal plan that is right for your health needs.

Yeah, that's the algae thing @FallingObjects was talking about. The powder stuff is gross. The bottled stuff is great.

Also, I am in no way recommending Soylent as a total meal replacement for anyone. I'm using it that way, and it's working for me, but lots of weird shit works for me and wouldn't for anyone else.

Thank you! It's prime ribcap cooked on carbon steel all the way with no oven. And that is indeed a MAC Mighty 9.5" - a great knife!
