Is it wrong that I want to install this on my mom's devices so she won't give out personal information to all the Nigerian princes? (laugh all you want, but our folks who are ignorant in the ways of the internet are prime targets here)

Actually, that's a good idea. My mom got scammed once. Sent a few thousand dollars to a "friend" who lost her wallet and passport while vacationing in Africa.

Where do we draw the line with safety vs security? With kids it is different of course, they're directly vulnerable. On the other hand how would we all feel about our shared big daddy/momma gaining access to all our internet history?

I agree with trust being a very important thing. Not blind trust of another to do or not do something, but being trusted by them so that you'll be more aware of what is happening and be better able to have open conversations. If someone doesn't trust you they will inevitably hide things from you, to avoid your anger or judgement.

Human beings are gonna do what they wanna do, or at least try to, whether they're youngsters or of age.

I agonised for fully ten minutes the first time I saw that scam... And then realised it was utterly impossible for the faked-from person to be where the mail claimed. Yes... I'm a bit slow sometimes, but I guess some people are a lot slower.

My wife had a very plausible/persuasive caller asking for bank card details only a couple of weeks ago. She installed Truecaller.

But this Bark... I only have to tick boxes to claim I'm over 18 and will only use it for my own children?

Haha, just asked my daughter how many of the following terms she knew:
    • Lit/Turnt/Turnt Up – Something that’s active or popular, can also refer to being stoned or drunk
    • Juul – A type of e-cigarette that is small and discreet, ‘pods’ are used for smoking
    • Dabbing – Reference to concentrated doses of cannabis; also a dance craze
    • SMH – “Shaking my head,” meaning “I don’t believe it” or “that’s so dumb”
    • KMS/KYS – “kill myself/kill yourself” can be used jokingly or for cyberbullying
    • Netflix and Chill – Getting together and hooking up
    • AF – Short for “as f**k,” used to mean “extremely”
    • TF – Short for “the f**k,” an expression of disbelief
    • WTF – Short for “what the f**k,” meaning “I can’t believe that”
    • STFU – Short for “Shut the f**k up,” can be used as an expression of disbelief or to cyberbully
    • Snatched – On point, very good, or well styled
    • Thot – Stands for “that hoe over there” and is often used instead of “slut,” occasionally used as a misspelling of “thought.”
    • fboy or fboi – Shorthand for “F**k boy,” meaning a guy that is just looking for sex, used derogatorily as in “slut”
    • Basic – Referring to someone who is viewed as boring or a conforming person
      • [IMG]– This emoji is used to mean pride or general acceptance of an idea
      • [IMG] – The eggplant emoji is used to refer to the penis
      • [IMG] – The peach emoji is used in sexting, referencing the butt
Turns out most of them, although she uses some alternate terms with her friends.

This Bark.com stuff is dumb. It takes advantage of the fears of the crazy helicopter parents of today who do everything for their kids including wiping their the smegma off their kids' private parts. Seriously, a lot of bored upper middle class moms have nothing else better to do than worry about this stuff. There's an entire market around this to make money.

And here I thought SMH meant So Much Hate. Those other terms are kind of shocking, but not unbelievable.

When kids first started using YOLO around here, I legitimately thought it was just some new yogurt-in-a-squeezetube thing that was popular.

as a 17 year old, I think that is stupid, and a violation of privacy.
also, @Marvey , I knew all of those terms.
also, I don't use social media, so I don't really care about it.

Peach was a word for vagina when I was a teen. Gotta keep slang fresh, though.

As my parents found out, trying this kind of stuff only results in your kid coming up with more clever ways to hide what they're up to.

(They raised me right, I was just a bit of a shithead when I was younger)

One possible way to use this might be with really young kids (who probably shouldn't have their own smart device anyway) and explaining to them that you're going to install it so you can help ward off baddies. But then you could always teach them to come to you when anything strange pops up.

We're trying to have a kid now but by the time it comes to it there'll be an entirely new set of shit to worry about.

I feel sad for kids today - they are connected to the internet 24/7 and subjected to such powerful forces. Things sucked growing up in the 80s but I could always tune out and live in books and music.

Has it been all de-evolution since the Enlightenment? Or since some other unknown/ unrecognized pinnacle? It's hard for me not to think in pessimistic terms about our fate. I suppose that seeing some of my friends' wonderful and bright children (we have none ourselves) does give me hope.

    EDIT: and the music

It's only so if parents let it happen. My son loves the Internet and would otherwise watch stupid YouTube videos or play the *.io games all day. But he's super willing to drop what he's doing on the Internet to play catch with a football, work on his four square game, or play with remote control cars.
