To what end? Running to a CD recorder? I'd suggest getting a flash/USB recorder that does 24 bit if so. Otherwise any DAC should be able to do 24.

Correct. Yggdrasil was first. The MB tech trickled down to the Gungnir, then to the Bifrost, then to Modi, and eventually, probably to Jotunheim.

For those who missed it, here's Jason and Mike introducing Jil (scroll to ~13:00 minutes):

PS In short, Jil is Modi-sized, 200$, Sigma/Delta ADC with USB out. And go buy it folks! As per @baldr: "And if it moves, the good news is, we may just build a multibit."

    Very nice.

THD is <-94dB, IMD <-90.5dB. So we are looking at a clean 16 bits. Very solid for this price point. Though of course I am daydreaming of the multibit balanced version...but first we gotta make sure these move.

Seems like our name guesses were coincidental:

I like the comment on the product page "Mike and Nelson Pass designed an ADC for Mobile Fidelity, the GAIN 1 system. For fun, look up how much CDs mastered with this ADC cost these days."

How would one track these down? Is it the MFSL label? (Because that seems to do GAIN 2 recordings as well...)

It is the MFSL label, for most of the '90s IIRC they used the GAIN system, then switched to GAIN 2 in the late '90s. Off the top of my head, some of the albums which used the GAIN 1 system are Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree by U2, and I'd have to double check for the others. It's a good amount of albums.

I think it is as simple as this (someone please correct me if otherwise). MFSL Gain CDs were made in Japan. By the time Gain 2 came along the CDs were made in USA.

Edit: I see it is not quite that simple. Gain started in 1993 and Gain 2 in 1999. (source)

I record in 24 and convert to 16bit using Cubase; obviously there's not a need for 24->16 on the fly conversion, but it would remove this step. I was a spoilt child.

If I cross-check this list with Marv's pointers, here's the list of 142 albums from the MFSL GAIN Era:

Quick question though. If we take:
    Code:
731 Aug-98 John Coltrane Ballads Universal
This album was released in 1998, but Coltrane died in 1967. So obviously it couldn't have been a "live" recording. Does this mean that MFSL GAIN was used to rip the recording from analogue tapes or similar?
