"NO TESTED" & "As such these Quad ELS 57's will be sold "as is" with no warranty. No Returns."

Search on the Quad ESL 57 while considering these. While they sound really good (for what they are) they have limitations and potential problems. I heard a new double stack system, many years ago, and the dealer would only play string quartets for me. They sounded wonderful on that program material.

From what I've read, over the years, they are mid-centric (although the mids had a magical quality to me). Highs and bass not so much. Can't play them very loud (at all) on full range program material. Not appropriate for Rock, etc. Very directional with a very narrow sweet spot.

Impedance curve dips way low at several frequencies so mind the amp you match them up with. Arcing is a common and expensive problem.

Apparently they are great speakers for the right listeners if they are in proper condition and are driven by a proper amp and with proper program material and in the narrow sweet spot.

yeah, looks difficult, but these sell for ~2k in good condition on eBay. But, i don't have $600, or room for these in my college dorm.

I just wanted you to google and see what you may be getting into, in case you didn't already know.

Edit: Curious if you have seen these sell for high prices in a "not tested" condition. @spwath

This is my memory of auditioning Quads. They can sound beautiful as long as you don't move your head.

no, but one could take the risk. If they worked, would be a great deal

I agree. I used to toy with the idea of getting a pair, myself.

Yeah, I want to try out different speaker techs, like planar, electrostatic, and variations on conventional, field coil, open baffle, horns, ect.

I did briefly get to hear magnepans when purchasing my turntable on craiglist, but hard to tell their sound with unfamiliar music, room, and all the other gear was high end, McIntosh amp, audio research preamp. Sounded good for sure. And they are big.

Just noticed the quads have original box and manual... seems like a good deal. But a stupid purchase to do just before going to college...

Beware of used quads. They are all ticking time bombs. Look at the cost some people get for reconditioning these things. Ive seen many used pairs for way less than I would expect, and they all had quirks, known issues, and people eager to part with them.

Thanks for this, however someone beat me to it. :(
I'm still on the prowl for a nighthawk, Ph3d or similar.
