I tried this recently. It was very smooth and pleasant, and absolutely nothing like any Scottish whisky I've ever tried.

Edit: Damn, I just Googled this some more and didn't realise how expensive it is.

Those who think they know whisky will scoff at japanese single malts. But the truth is that japanese single malts like Yamazaki 12y, Yoichi 15y and many others known to be one of the finest whiskys made right now. The Hakushu, while not a personal favorite, is a great addition to japanese single malts.

Japanese whisky is amazing, same with some of the Australian and New Zealand stuff coming out.
I don't really think the yamizake 18 and some of the ultra sort after bottles are worth the hype, but the aged statements from hibiki, yamizake, yoichi and hakushu are incredible value.
I really don't rate nikka.. it is $20aud a bottle in japan and used as a quaffing whisky, so many people hold it in high regard because it is $80 a bottle for 500ml outside of Japan. It's super basic and pleasant but I have to laugh when people think it is top shelf stuff!

I happen to be visiting Australia currently and am wondering if you could offer some suggestions. I could grab some as a wedding gift here.

ooh, there are a few good choices for Australian whisky gifts. I'm a big fan of Heartwood from Tasmania next I would probably recommend Sullivan’s Cove French Oak, Limeburners Director’s Cut or the Sherry Cask Fannys Bay. if you are looking a little bit cheaper maybe Port cask Overeem or the PX starward.

Starward is not a traditional whisky at all but it is getting a lot of international attention lately..
I don't rate Nant, Hellyers road, Lark or Timboon

+1 for Sullivan's Cove (although I'm biased ;)). French Oak is sensational. Double Cask isn’t a bad drop either.

I've heard great things about the Japanese whiskies but being a bourbon guy the price point of most of the bottles keeps me away. Maybe one day Ill pick one up for a special occasion or something.

Just cracked a bottle of Ardbeg An Oa. I have this theory that these finished whiskies are a way to use/hide casks that failed selection. This is a bourbon and PX finish and it's OK but for my money the 10 is better. In fact including limited edition Lagavulin, Caol Ila and the like I have regularly been left wanting by finishes vs. the basic product.

    Maybe I'm just plain?

Anyway, it's not bad...the typical Ardbeg 10 smoke and peat, just a little less rounded and deep and with a more bite and bitterness riding under a more floral nose. 10 out of meh.

Try the Suntory Toki. Can usually be found for $40 at Binny's or even Costco if you luck out. Fairly representative of the lighter touch that most Asian whiskeys have. Not too smokey or peaty. For about $20 more, you can give the Hibiki Harmony a shot. A little bit more character and a lovely display worthy bottle. My Costco has them for $60.

I just received a bottle of High West Campfire the other day. Campfire is a blend of rye, bourbon, and scotch. I'm generally not a fan of blended whiskeys, especially when combining different types of whiskey, but I have to say that I'm quite surprised with the quality of this dram. High West has done a nice job of melding the spiciness of rye, the sweetness of bourbon, and the smokiness of scotch, resulting in a flavor that can best be described as...well, a campfire. I'd say that peat smoke is the dominant flavor in this whiskey, so you have to like peaty scotch to begin with, but no single flavor profile overwhelms the others. I received this item as a gift, but I like it enough that I would purchase it for myself in the future.

Well damn is all I can say. Maybe I'll play mixologist with that An Oa and some single grain corn.

I find Japanese whiskies at CostCo too but they are all blended. I don't know if Loki meant single-malt

If you play mixologist, make sure to report back on your findings. I’m curious to see what you come up with.

Right, so a 50/50 of An Oa and Bains's Cape mountain Whisky which is a single grain corn whiskey. Initial thoughts are that it tastes way less jarring than it sounds.

15 minutes to breathe. Nose is good, tobacco and leather from the An OA and a nice supporting sweetness form the Bain's. Some acridness tempered on tasting, so it becomes a bit more spicy than biting.

Definitely an improvement. The flavors actually meld well. Tail end of the finish is a little bite-y but this is really pretty civilized. It's like the simpler corn whisky buffers and lifts the smoke and peat without over asserting itself and creates an overall mellower experience.

    Very nice in fact.

Fascinating! It’s interesting to think that about the possibilities that this opens up. If you’re disappointed with the taste of a particular whiskey, you could temper it with the flavor profile of another. Mixing three types of whiskey sounds challenging, so if I had a scotch that needed tempering, I’d be inclined to add some sweet bourbon, and if I wanted to temper a bourbon, I’d probably add some rye. Scotch and rye feels like it would be especially challenging, but maybe it’s not as difficult as it sounds.

I did but Im definitely not a snob about it either...I don't care if its blended as long as it tastes good. Yes though all the Japanese whiskies I've heard about are single malts. That said they are also basically impossible to find around here and cost into the hundreds of dollars.

I have seen the Toki and Hibiki and I have thought about giving those a try as they relatively reasonable priced and also have reputations of being good.
