Kind of my MO right now. I need to switch up to something more sustainable. Maybe pick up learning how to play a guitar.

that’s exactly what I did. It’s ability to suck up hours and hours with practice is amazing. DIY audio also has a high time -to-money ratio.

@Hooncake, check out the weight of 200 LPs. Can you lift it? It is a common mistake with both records and books, that people find a nice, big box, and fill it up. And then discover that they have the equivalent of a block of wood (and vinyl might be denser) that size and they can't shift it.

They're all great, just different. I heard all 3 in one sitting and like the Auteur more than the others.

@murphythecat The Verite has the Aeolus on technicalities. But I'm not sure if it is worth the extra amount. Not to say aeolus has nothing for technicalities, it's definitely there as others have said. Your situation in not hearing any of these is more problematic. If you're risk averse and ready to die on that hill, I'd get the Aeolus and live with it for awhile.

As one having all the three for months and selling two later, I'd say once addicted (tricky learning curve), there can't be no contest -- Verite surely better in all aspects. With typical diminishing return curve in mind, I still think it worth. Verite is the only survived pair in my place in the end.

I always say Auteur is a safer bet though.. All the benefits brought to the table immediately recognizable.

I wonder if that’s why it seems used CDs made in Japan or Europe seem to be more desirable than those made in the USA?

@luckybaer More likely those EU/JP masterings are desirable.

Sent my Freya S back for a replacement due to a noisey Nexus stage and mistakenly got delivered a Freya+ today.

    2. monacelli
Sounds like it may be too much gain. In X4 mode, Freya S adds 12 dB of gain to your chain. If your stereo amp has high gain, and/or you have sensitive speakers, this can easily result in loud audible hiss. For example, when I run Freya S in X4 mode into Vali 2 on high gain, I get the kind of hiss you describe. Flip Vali 2 into low gain, no hiss. Just a heads up in case your replacement unit doesn't fix it.

    3. Aklegal
No, it wasn't gain. Nexus 4X is 12 db gain and so is tube mode on the Freya+. The Freya+ is extremely quiet in my system. My headphone amp has 14db gain in preamp mode and again I have to put my ear to the tweeter to hear hiss. What the defective S put out was more like broadband white noise. Clearly audible through even my midrange drivers.

A guy on another forum (I left) made himself an extension box. It was well done and a work of art, but... "I filled it with clear acrylic for the insulation." Yes, it looked nice. But WTF does he think the *air* does in ordinary strips? Audiophool.

Amp/DAC wise, I have a Modi multbit and a Vali 2, but I much prefer my new Modius/Asgard 3 combo. No more digititus, great bass, and smooth mids up to the top range.
