Mjo1 arrived a few hrs ago. Was my impulse buy successful? Certainly! Amazed by its almost over-contrasting and over-holographic sound.
    1. Vtory
Much better paired with 2541 (currently SE) than I expected. Very complementary and synergistic combo I dare to say. Not quite reference-y (overall sound is rather rough and unpolished to me) but crazily engaging..

8XX is just full on haunting - in the right setup. On the wrong setup it sounds exactly like the reviews suggest.

Not my warm, tubey ones - basically the stuff I had setup for HD800/S not working for 8XX so far.

Is Audacity still the FREE "go to" Win 10 prog for music file analysis? Just listened to 2 Cat Stevens remasters, want to confirm.

I've started to like the HD800 in it's stock form for most of my pleasure listening.
    1. santoshmanivannan
I even got the SDR mods for them and a premium license of sonarworks but I think I'm going to keep it stock.

I use my 6XX for music that doesn't work with the 800. I think I'm happy with this combo and going to stick with it.

Yeah, I have a copper Periapt cable that you can use. I can live with SE for my 800 for the duration of the loaner.

HE560 V4 sounds pretty good, could be perfect for daily use on PC, except the itchy flurry new pads and pressure sensitive drivers
    1. Ti_Leo
IIRC, the OG HE560 sounded quite spikey on treble, didn't like it.
      HE560 V2 sounded dull, boring (2.5mm socket).
V3 was just a headband lengthened version of V2 with 3.5mm connection.
Now V4 sounds a bit warm and more... musical? It could use a bit of more subbass, but good enough.

When I was a kid I got part way through learning the violin. That put me off wanting to try to learn anything else, which I've always kinda regretted. Now I'm retired, maybe it's time - if only to challenge the retiree in the apt directly above me who's learning the trumpet.

Pretty sure the ones for sale recently were the stock they had held on to to cover for the warranty period of the final run. If you can find a set of cups left over from someones Lawson mod you can fit them to an E-MU Teak.

I bought an Ebony version from sbaf that was in bad shape, but I fixed it up. I used to own the PH and I remember liking it more. I don’t mind the Ebony, just need to do a cable mod so I can comfortably use it with my phone with a short cable. Was hoping to buy a newer PH with detachable cable from Drop. I suppose I can try the Teak as well.

There are also the current Denons which use a newer (or bespoke?) version of the drivers. They have a dryer timbre vs. the older models. Less organic but still a biocellulose sound. Also a flatter tuning.

If you are using cloud storage then it is ok. The only real time the storage will be an issue if you are loading it up with so much comics. For general purpose stuff Boox almost covers all of your bases.

Almost forgot, e-ink displays will have slower refresh rates. Give it time to load up the information on your screen. I believe Boox can also allow you to customize the screen refresh of an app so it can get rid of ghosting. Youtube should be your friend.

I started salivating over their 27" e-ink display. :) But then realized that $1.8k display wouldn't get all that much usage for me. Better would be a tablet with the same (portrait orientation) height as my LCD 27" display that could switch between tablet mode and external display mode, with a quick-mount stand to operate as a vertical sidecar display. That would be suhweet.

I wonder how good hifi gear was in 1981. I have no idea. Because I would claim that one "magical" listening experience I had this year was definitely only possible because of the very expensive high end gear that was carefully assembled and tweaked by the owner. I knew the song we were listening to and I already liked it before, but it sounded so otherwordly on his rig that it was indeed "magical" in a sense.

Concerning music in general I'd also claim that one needs at least a decent system in order to appreciate much music. At the same time there's also music that doesn't need a decent system but I think he's too generalizing there or has never heard a truly great two channel setup (again, I don't know what was possible in 1981).

Freudian weirdness aside, most of what's in there is pretty familiar stuff. Especially the final target really being manufacturers ginning up nonsense reasons to sell stuff for inflated prices.
