that vali is very tempting... How does it compare to the magni 2 and the vali 2?
is it as good of a hd650 companion as the vali 2?

I paired the Vali with the GO450 you now have as the DAC and it was a good chain for HD650. The Vali is a very warm sounding amp that the GO450 brought good clarity and soundstage to. $50 shipped is a great price.

yeah, that's what I was thinking. Use the go450 dac with the amp, then use go450 amp when not at home (or dorm soon...)

I might have to snatch this up. The one thing holding me back is I can't see the pretty tube...

@Marvey once wrote (I think) that the Vali 1 could give the Lyr a run for the money.

I wouldn't personally describe the Vali as a very warm sounding amp per say. A bit of tube liquidity, yes, but not warm like the BH Crack or something along those lines. I personally prefer it over the magni amps, but there are the usual SS/tube trade offs. Marv's write up on the old Chang site is worth reading (see below). Honestly, the amp is far more capable than most sources people throw at at it. Vali 2 is a definite upgrade and more flexible though due to the tube rolling option, but obviously more expensive.

FYI - My Vali has virtually no microphonic issues. Some of the earlier builds seemed to have problems with this, but I actually have to tap the unit to hear anything.

Caution: If you've never had a tube amp you will most likely fall in love and soon start thinking to yourself, "If this is what $50 will get me then what about $XXX?" And then, "If one tube sounds this good what about 2/4/6??" and, "Wow! Whole websites of just tubes for sale? 50,000+ EBay hits for 'vacuum tube'?? I guess a few tubes won't hurt!"

It's only $50 though, kid.. go ahead.. try it.

Indeed, it's a great amp with distinct character. Just make sure you get the SB upgrade if you do. The stock crack is pretty lacking in the resolution department for my tastes. If you're driving a Senn 6 series, you'll want that extra capability.

How is the Vali with IEMs and Grados? Is it noisy?

Definitely don't pair that Vali with IEMs. Great little amp, though.
