I'm no liquor connoisseur, and I happen to have a very low tolerance for alcohol (meaning I get wasted with only a few shots). In fact I was recently hospitalized due to acute pancreatitis after drinking more than my body could handle it.

So far, the only wine I've tasted that I actually enjoyed was port wine, which is a type of fortified wine (and therefore stronger than regular wine). As for beer, I often go for Pilsner Urquell, Guinness or Sapporo. My favorite liquor though is hot sake, which I always drink whenever I go to a sushi-ya.

It's genetics, right? My record is 35+ bottles of 0.5L 5% beer.

Yep, genetics play an important role (genes encoding an enzyme called cytochrome P450, to be precise), as well as body weight. It is my understanding that Asians in general have lower alcohol tolerance than Westerners, due to difference in both physique and genes.

35+ bottles of beer, that would be over 17 liters! I don't think I could drink 17 liters even if it were just water.

Yeah, if I remember correctly LD50 of water was around 8L for average person.
Despite being eastern- caucasian and 100kg I threw up at least 4 times, that I remember.
Never again was printed into the brain at least at the next day and the day after that.

Without hijacking the thread too much, I took some molecular biology and genetics courses in my undergrad, and now I'm getting a DNA test from Ancestry. Should get the results from the lab in 4-6 weeks. Gonna be interesting seeing what comes of it, considering I'm half Asian. Wonder how much detail they provide, or if it's just generic.

@Donald North 1 table spoon of apple cider vinegar, half a big-sized lemon (to be squeezed), 1 tablespoon of honey, a pinch of cinnamon in 600 ml of filtered water; two whole cayenne peppers to be immersed in the concoction.

It seems to me the more important question for Koth is, what are you detoxing from? :drunk:

I lost 10 kilograms (22 pounds) over a three-month period, brought my slightly elevated blood sugar levels down and generally find my energy levels to be better. No I am not detoxing :D

Yea it's definitely more of a genetic thing but also depends on how much you drink regularly obviously. For the Asian tolerance thing, I'm pretty sure it's because of a gene that either doesn't break down alcohol as well or doesn't break down one of its side products. It doesn't affect as many Asians as you think it would (like a quarter of the population). Many of those countries drink a crap ton on the regular and a lot of their stuff is like our moonshine over here.

    Yup, pretty much spot on.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction

"The reaction is the result of an accumulation of acetaldehyde, a metabolic byproduct of the catabolic metabolism of alcohol, and is caused by an acetaldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency."

(Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase = Protein that breaks down acetaldehyde. The deficiency of this enzyme is caused mostly by genetic factors.)

"Approximately 36% of East Asians (Japanese, Chinese, and Koreans) show a characteristic physiological response to drinking alcohol that includes facial flushing, nausea, and tachycardia."

Of particular interest is that theoretically you could take pills like the ones they have for lactose intolerant people, and temporarily boost your alcohol tolerance! Not sure if they actually have these available though.

Lagavulin. First bottle I've ever tried. Opened a few weeks ago and returning to it now.

One word to describe it... Campfire.

I've got a Bell's Hopslam Double IPA that someone left in the cooler at my Superbowl party.

    Pretty tasty.

Currently sipping a wee dram of Talisker Distillers Edition. Normally drink the 10 yr old, but thought I would give this try. Nice level of peatiness mixed with the aged sherry casks. Wonderful! I am very partial to Talisker since visiting the distillery on Skye many moons ago and sipping this brings back memories of scrambling and skree running in the Cuillins.
