+4dB and -10dB are incomplete designations. It should be +4dBu and -10dBV. The letter after the dB designates the reference. dB by itself is only a ratio. In this case dBu indicates a reference of 0.775 Vrms while dBV indicates a reference of 1.0 Vrms. With this information we have:
    +4dBu = 1.228 Vrms
    -10dBV = 0.316 Vrms

20*log(1.228/0.316) = 11.79 dB difference between those two standard levels.

Single ended is usually associated with -10 dBV levels.
Balanced is usually associated with +4 dBu levels.
    But not always.

Just rearranging a couple things in numerical orders...

    +4 dBu = 1.228 Vrms
    0 dBV = 1.0 Vrms
0 dBu = 0.775 Vrms (delivers 1mW at 600 ohms; historical telephone line reference)
    -10dBV = 0.316 Vrms

How do these compare with the Yamaha HS series?

FIXED. I'M AN IDIOT. The LSR305 comes with US power cables. For those of you living in countries that have grounded 3 pin plugs (we use UK plugs where I live), make sure to get proper 3 pin cables, instead of adding adapters to the LSR cables like I did. Once I did that, I was able to use the Vali 2 as a preamp with no issues.

Now hope THIS helps anyone who might be facing the same issues!

    Hi all,

First post on this forum. Nice place.

Looking at picking up the Modi 2 Uber + Magni 2 Uber combo for my headphones and wanted to get some speakers that would go with it for my desktop setup.

I was thinking of picking these up. Was just curious if anyone else uses these with the Magni / Modi 2 Uber. Seems like some people here do reading through the thread, but just wanted to see what kind of compatibility there is. Also curious if anyone has sub recommendations that would go with this setup as I'm not sure about the wiring and setup of it all.

    Cheers and thanks in advance.

Welcome! I encourage you to introduce yourself in the "introduce yourself" thread. It may seem like a formality, but it goes a long way in the goodwill department.

I can't speak to the magni/modi2u combo with the 305's but when I had Modi Multibit/valhalla2 it was peachy. The 305 is a versatile powered speaker, so it isn't going to change too much based on the pre-amp (which is what your magni will be doing). You will probably notice bigger improvements by upgrading dac with the 305, but that is almost beside the point: a common refrain at SBAF is "transducer first" and the 305 has great transducers.

As for sub, the LSR310s is the one meant to integrate with the 305 and 308, so that is a place to start. I have heard it in a showroom, and it seemed great, but it was in a showroom so I can't really extrapolate that experience with reliability. I think monoprice makes a generic version of the same thing. I also recall @ultrabike discussing sub options with similar speakers (I think he auditioned the 305 but ended up getting mackies?).

Thanks everyone. I'll make sure to introduce myself and be mindful of the rules. I remember hearing about this forum via head-fi a while back but had put audio interest on hiatus. Cheers for all the help.

Yup. I got the MR5 MK3s instead of the JBLs. I liked them one mosquito fart better.

My wife ended up telling me that she liked how the JBL305s look better though. Sound wise I don't think one can go wrong with the JBL305s or the MR5 MK3s. The Mackie CR stuff does not seem to be up to snuff though.

Did you also audition subs to go with the Mackies? I swear I read about that in one of the threads but cannot remember if it was here or chang. Am I losing my mind?

I didn't audition a bunch of subs, but the cheap 12" Dayton I got new for < $100 kicked ass. One needs to eq and maybe do active crossover between the monitors and the subs though.

I use a cheap miniDSP for that.

This is my cheap bedroom setup. To me it sounds awesome. Kids, wife and I actually listen to all sorts of music in my bedroom with this setup.

Surprised to hear you say that about the looks. It seems to me like a lot of people find the JBL305s quite ugly -- frankly, I was starting to feel the same way. The MR5 MK3s certainly seem to look more appealing at first glance albeit slightly more toy-ish in the stock photos. Thanks for all your input, gives me something to think about.

Hey man, don't ask me. I like how my MR5 MK3s look. I like how they look better than the JBL305s by far.

But the wife saw the 305s at Guitar Center and told me I should have bought those cuz she thinks they were more cute. Go figure. Maybe she got annoyed at my enthusiasm and decided to give me shit.

Too late anyway. Wife is not too concerned about it. I like them.

I went to Guitar Center and listened to the 305s, along with the 308s, some Yamahas, and several others.

The 305s definitely sounded far and away the best. And they look pretty good in real life actually.

Just put in my Amazon order. Excited to have them!

Per Will (not sure if @CEE TEE):
    TL;DR, differences are:
    1) 1dB matching
    2) Gloss lacquer coating
    3) Removable custom rubber feet

I do wish it was matte - glossy stuff is cleaning-intesive - but it is what it is.

Dust... renders all shiny things nice and matt soon enough :)

I think it is that added aura of farm manure that Massdrop seem to specialise in.

But I am not saying that it is not a good buy. If you are in the USA, and these speakers are on your want list, and the price compares well with your local store, one word: buy!

And I rather like the smell of a good, traditional farmyard, even if it did come steaming out of cows! I'm sure I'd be happy with these, shining on my desk, matched to 1dB --- but I'd be just as happy with the unshining ones. Even if I have to move the balance control a fraction, as if I'd even notice.

You'd need a calibrated mike and extensive EQ to keep everything within 1db deviation though. To be fair though the environment (and the ball of lubber listening to the speakers) is probably going to cause larger deviation than 1db already.
