LOL, the level of a-hole-ness is intentional and varies depending upon influx of immigrants. Some oldskool members don't participate as much anymore because they feel SBAF has already become too noisy "with them immigrants and all". A lot of newer people have privately expressed that they wish this place could be a little bit nicer. It's hard being a benevolent dictator.

99% of immigrants actually do fit right in. Some even affect change in the culture for the better. @Serious has thrown out some thoughtful considerations that deal with measurement accuracy the mids / upper mids. @gbeast has called me on a lot of my crap. I'd be lying if I didn't say that a miniature angelic form of @gbeast wasn't always on my shoulder reminding me not to be an a-hole. (Most of time, I just swat him away).

There is a real concern that if we were too nice, we'd receive a huge influx of people from HF because of its declining quality. We do have totally open borders, but I'd still prefer to be selective. Also, while not a popular stance today, I am strongly anti-egalitarian: where everyone has a equal voice and should be equally respected. Respect is earned here. Not necessarily with knowledge and expertise but by being totally genuine.

Yeah, I think you did. Lots of pirate t-shirts? Animosity between chang and HF in place, but new, and not yet entrenched at that meet as I recall. That one? I attended 2 or 3 of the Redwood City meets, ant first and maybe second to last or so wikia meets. I like the mid sized to big Bay Area meets. Lots of folks to meet, some great gear to hear.

Yup we have met. I remember I enjoyed talking with you. Yeah Pirate T-'s. But I met a lot of great people that day. Marv, CEE-TEE, and the unforgettable um..... zerodeefex. (Just kidding bro). Hope you'll spend more time here. Once you get used to us it's the best place.

I've read a lot of his reviews. I'm having a hard time remembering one where he had any criticism of the product he was reviewing. He's another that has steered me off course before I wised up. Well kinda wised up.

Nah, if a product is cheaper than another, he typically poops on the cheaper one on a relative sense. He praises the cheaper one in that it's great for the money, but the expensive one is superior to him. Even if its an obvious piece of junk.

I mean, this is the same guy that claims all random shit is great and craps all over facts and data. All he offers is his experience which is all over the map, and because of that pretty much worthless.

If the guy is not deaf, he is mentally deaf. He only hears the price tag.

EDIT: To some it may seem like I'm being an asshole to Steve, but I've seen way too much of his bullshit. And it has irritated me over the years.

Steve Guttenberg made his impression on me with an "As We See It" in Stereophile magazine. It was an entire page of text but the gist of it was simple. "It is stupid not to love brickwalled mastering because it is so pervasive. Don't tolerate it, love it!". I'm paraphrasing but that was all he really said.

My brain doesn't work that way.

He's certainly has irritated my wallet. A certain home theater receiver comes to mind. Had a really nice sounding and nicely priced receiver. All my musician buddies liked it too. Then I got upgradeitis after reading a review about another receiver at twice the price. Found it at a stereo store at a demo close out, so didn't pay MSRP. I listened to it in the store but too much other gear playing for good audition, and they did a shit job of speaker placement. Had auto level mic etc. Couldn't get it to sound close to the cheaper receiver once I got it home. Couldn't return it because it was a close out. Thanks Steve. It's on a shelf in the garage. Thanks Steve.
Maybe too many loud rock concerts in his youth standing in front of the speakers?

maybe so, my point is it's passion that drives our world forward. The things we love are the driving force behind our actions, if you love to hate, then you'll always be driving yourself deeper into that hole, if you love music and to experience all of lifes pleasures with another person then is the driving force of your actions. So the things listed are what make MY world go round... I've always wondered what is your Title related to Marvey? It seems maybe I'm taking it out of context

I agree with the HF Bashing, I've spent to much time here venting my frustrations on HF... creating noise as it were

Still I've been at HF since 2012, not nearly as long as others, but I remember what is was like when I joined... it's not the same now, I think you'll find more joy in this hobby by contributing and browsing on both sites.

Absolutely. You caught me trying to be funny with adolescent humor. I suspect my attempt was kinda lame. Here's what I was trying to do:

I'm with marvey, amazing sex and amazing music make the world go round! Seeing a movie with the wife tonight! Followed by some time with Colonel Angus

See - adolescent humor (and that is giving me more credit than I deserve). And poor taste. And kinda lame.

    No bothers,
I was hoping some one who catch the SNL reference and we could carry the conversation in that direction lol, I'm sure there has to be a Skit they've done that mirrors the situation at HF...

This was a really good opportunity for Jude to step up and show us what he was made of. He could have done two things: 1) said that he was sorry for any appearance of impropriety; 2) said he may have made a rush to judgement, because in his own words "different systems, different results; 3) put an end to the Tyll bashing by certain HF'ers by firming standing behind Tyll, if not from his contributions to the hobby, at least as a person.

The fact that Jude did none of these things, but instead offered a weak statement that went along the lines of "Tyll and I are cordial and talking", and censored all posts which even remotely questioned Jude's actions, tells me there is something going on to Jude. At this point, it's more what Jude didn't say than what he didn't say.

Kind of like if the Secretary of State said "We and the North Koreans are cordial and talking. I have no other comments at this time".

Jude and I have always been cordial to each other at the CanJams. Hi Marv, how's it going. Hi Jude. He always notices me first though.

SG has made at least one recommendation that is at the very bottom end of the $$$ scale.

The Dayton B652 speakers (≈$40) are actually 'decent'.
I mean there are better for sure and these are now $65 due to tweaks and mods I have made, but still $40-65/pr of speakers that actually are decent is remarkable.
And they do reveal changes I make to the electronic stack, which speaks to their resolution and suitability as tools to use for exploring and evaluating other changes to the rest of the entire system.

    An example.
I recently was able to crank my Rok amp up to full (on gain level 2) into these speakers with no discernible added distortion which filled the entire house to a level of having to purposely talk over the music.
    From a near field setup.
This is a first, for me and this system.

So in this case his low budget suggestion worked out quite nicely.

    Yeah...

    From Steve's review conclusion (https://www.cnet.com/news/dayton-b652-air-dirt-cheap-speakers-arent-supposed-to-sound-like-this/):

"The Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speaker is better in every way -- bass, dynamics, clarity, treble -- you name it, but it's roughly double the price of the B652-AIR. Both B652 models can play fairly loud, but sound best at softer, more moderate volumes; the SP-BS22 handles volume better. If you can afford the difference go for the SP-BS22-LR."

Like I said, he praises the cheaper one in that it's great for the money, but the expensive one is superior. Classic. How about comparing the B652 with more expensive speakers and provide some discussion about what the cheaper option does better than the expensive one, if truly he feels the cheaper options are that good.

I would more likely follow this far more useful review's conclusion from @noaudiophile (http://noaudiophile.com/Dayton_B652/):

"There is something to be said for getting sound on the cheap, but If you start out your audio life with these speakers look for a replacement as soon as you can possibly afford it. A little bit of perspective here, we have a $40 pair of speakers.. they sound like $40 speakers. In comparison to what they were 8 months ago when the tweeter was broken and crossing over to early this is a huge improvement. If you buy these you are getting what you pay for, but not a penny more. These are not the saviors of budget hi-fi, they are cheap in sound and performance."

IMO @noaudiophile provides a far more useful review and recommendation that Steve's classic "everything is awesome, but the more expensive stuff is awesomest" classic and canned approach that tells me not a damned thing. Other than expensive is better.

    +++

Nothing against you @johnjen, and please take no offense. I believe you in that the B652 are good for what they are. But SG is IMO pretty lame. Have yet to see anything useful out of him.

When he made is initial recommendation there was only the B652 (no 'better' versions were available at that time).

And yeah he does have the bit, of more $$=always better, clenched firmly in his teeth.
I figure he needs to eat and NY ain't cheap.

    JJ
ps no offense perceived nor taken.
They are after all $40 speakers :thumb

    ROFLOL!!!

SG needs to move to Colorado or something. That would likely improve his reviews dramatically.

On the <$40 range back then, I actually bought a set of computer speakers from Boston Acoustics for like $30 something bucks on sale (originally $99). The setup included both speakers and the amplifier (which I believe is class A/B):

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...ustics_MM220MDNT_MM_220_Computer_Speaker.html

    I measured them:

    mm220_right_fr_and_distortion_78db.jpg

The small drivers provided an awesomely wide sweet spot. On an action movie with gun violence my wife one time came running from the kitchen to the bedroom all worried that shit was going down outside. It was these speakers.

They were great for the price IMO. But they are discontinued and so are the Philips MMS321 which seem to be almost identical. I doubt things like these will get any attention from the likes of SG. At least while he continues enjoying the life in NY.
