Worthy questions. The original post is confusing in this regard.

Also, to clarify: are these CD or LP rips being digitally processed by LFF or are these unmastered source files being mastered by LFF?

The way most independent studios do this is by requiring the person either own an existing original or purchase an original before work is done. Essentially this is just like hiring an engineer to do a vinyl transfer or tape transfer. Check out places like the Haydn House Collection. You can also search for "LP to CD transfer service" and other such places.

That said, I don't do that simply because my work takes so long and I'm OCD about doing it right. Thus, I spend so much time on some tracks as to make it prohibitive so I just do them for myself.

No. People always ask and offer but the truth is that this simply takes too much time and effort to make it commercially viable for a single person purchase. I've been offered $1000.00 for Californication and I turned it down. Maybe if I can license it and sell a few thousand copies, then maybe....

Some can only be found in the digital domain. Others do come from the analog domain. Once something has been brickwalled, you can't do jack sh*t to fix it.

Ok. So to clarify, are we talking preexisting masters (on CD or vinyl) that are being tweaked by you, or are they tape transfers/digital pre-masters that you are then mastering?

@LFF So you have purchased masters/ second gens of those various albums?

Again, once something has been brickwalled, you can't do anything to fix it.

    OMG. Being OCD sucks.

Just ask people who have been to my place. I have multiple copies of some albums, the Japan release, the USA promo, the anniversary, etc. I have hundreds of vinyl records, etc. I've had to resort to putting most of my collection in storage due to the space requirements. I only keep rare copies and complete collections (like my Complete Mozart Phillips Edition First Edition) under glass and key at my place.

Oh, I'm the same way! What I was really asking was: are you purchasing unaltered pre masters from the record companies to do your remixes? If so, that's a substantial investment.
Edit: I meant remaster, not remix

I was just being clear. I agree with that statement but was curious if you were working with, say, non-brick-walled masters like late 80s/early 90s straight-off-the-tape CD releases. Or vinyl releases which, again, may not have been brick-walled. There is no intent to diminish your work or its results. I just wanted to know the provenance.

I would seriously kill for a proper remastering of Rebel Yell. The 2001 remaster was seriously boosted in level, and they slathered on a boomy room reverb that just killed the album. The current remaster on hdtracks eschews the reverb, but keeps the limiting and bright sound.

In some cases, yes. I've had to go back to first generation tapes. There is no such thing as a pre-master. That's actually called the final mix. There are some albums where you can't fix them unless you have the individual tracks or stems. Sometimes, there are no first generation tapes because they have been lost. You always want to go back to the earliest and best possible source.

Sorry for muddying the waters with the non-existent term "pre-master." Fast fingers at the end of a workday. Proceed.

I should just write a computer program that converts wave files from pre-existing CDs to LFF's version.

Can I get in on this?

I'd love to hear the type of quality LFF has remastered.

    It's do-able....

I've discussed a box-top system do this with someone but they said I would need to have a library of files to apply to each individual CD. That said, I discussed this about 10 years ago. Technology has changed.

I know it is illegal and blah blah blah but if there is a way to download these and make a donation to Luis, I would love a PM.

    Sorry.

That said, I do have some albums that I have worked on and are legit for sale.

    Check out:

Saving Cecil's Pride 3 CD Set

    Rachel Rising

I also did a 2 CD demo set for Fischer Audio. See if they have any for sale.
