The Japanese kicked ass economically and reached a peak in the late 80s and early 90s. At this point, they had topped out, reached a sort of utopia where anyone who wanted a job could get a job. Then the people stop having babies and played Nintendo or watched anime porn to escape their "matrix-ish" first world problems.

The problem is that the Japanese people were never meant to be pacifist pussies, constrained by their constitution and the embarrassment of their past aggression.

Don't worry. They will be back. This time in a more constructive way. Mainly because crazy Kim will ensure that Japan develops nukes, Gundam suits, Jaegers, etc.

OK, (gun) violence is an interpersonal (much less than an 'ownership') problem that is can lessened through well-implemented public health education and policy.

    1) Most folks contemplating suicide give a warning and are likely depressed. Depression is far more likely to be reported to a primary care provider than, say, a counselor. Education about suicide and depression helps those in contact with the suicidal in saying the right things and assisting in accessing good professional help.

    2) Domestic violence homicides can be impacted by identification and by multi-disciplinary intervention with folks who are demonstrating an escalating pattern of abuse and other problems.

    3) Gang violence can be reduced by intervention of respected peers (ex-gang members and community leaders) mediating conflict.

    OK, enough already.

Pointless discussing guns in USA. There is this thing called the 2nd Amendment. It's already been decided and won't be changed.

I remember seeing a dumpy angry guy in a Lamborghini in downtown Copenhagen. That was pretty tragic- cars aren't particularly welcome there, and we overtook him effortlessly on bikes a couple of times, before leaving him behind. Probably not the best city in which to own a paynis substitute car.

The very fact the 2nd AMENDMENT exists says otherwise.

I agree with others that it shouldn't be discussed here though.

If headphones replaced guns in the world, this would be a much better place!

Reminds me of seeing full-sized Hummer H1, ferraris etc.. in tiny little Macau. I'm sure that the Hummer cannot physically fit on some of the streets of Macau nor make some of the turns and there is absolutely no place for a Ferrari to open up except on the bridges to Taipa maybe. Casino money don't care.

I wish I was a citizen of the United Federation of Planets during the time of ST:TNG. I'd probably kill myself, despite Deanna Troi's best efforts.

Suicide is not "gun violence". We live in a free country and people have the personal freedom to choose to end their own life if they wish.

You're mincing words. A gun is a very effective way of killing. And killing is an act of violence. Most suicide is not about freedom.

EDIT: let me be clear, many completed suicides in the USA are a a form of gun violence.

I'm all for chainsaws! Chainsaws make for a fun time. Wait. Scratch that, I'm hungry; bust out the sriracha!

Ugh, oversized cars are the bane of my existence when I need to get somewhere within a day. I live in a town called Pasig that's well-known in Metro Manila for having exceptionally bad traffic. Part of this is due to the insane car regulation schemes (not allowing cars to go by certain roads on specific days depending on whether their plate number ends in an odd or an even number— yes that bullshittery is a thing) and drivers who just don't seem to care about the rules of the road, but it's also due in part to the absolutely terrible urban planning. Just look at this commuter hell:

Barely enough room for two sensibly sized sedans to fit side by side, and these roads are effectively reduced to one-way streets because people park on the f'ing road. Unpopular opinion: please don't get a car if you can't afford a place to park it. Sigh, I'd almost rather walk 10km to school than have to deal with traffic delays— might even arrive faster! Problem is the smog's getting worse and I might as well start smoking for all the good walking around'll do my lungs.

... Yeah, easy way to piss off a Pasigueño: talk about traffic. lol.

Thankfully incidents of road rage don't seem as common as elsewhere in Asia. Traffic accidents aside, things mostly just crawl along like an uphill-rolling ball of molasses.

It's like going out to dig up a taro root, but finding a fish instead.

Or like going to dig up a taro root and finding a domestic violence incident between your grandparents instead. :p
