Were you using Freya? It has too much gain probably.

    Well f**k.

Saga + NOS tube (using a 1946 Sylvania 6SN7) > Vidar is excellent. Big step up from Jotunheim. Crazy control and makes the Jotunheim feel flat by comparison.

Did you get your HE-6 back already?

This is with the Code-X! I am a little scared of what Lynx > Yggdrasil > Freya + matched 1952 Sylvania 6SN7s > dual Vidar > HE-6 LFF mod will sound like.

Whats the power draw like leaving a Vidar on all day compared to a Jot? I know the specs are probably posted but I cant make head or tail of them. Is it expensive to run a high powered amp all the time?

You don't have to leave the Vidar on all the time. Tonality is just a tad bassy and warm.

Vidar is an excellent HE-5/6 amp if you don't have $5500 sitting around. Just use Saga, or passive.

Im so scared to plug in my Code-x into a power amp - I know I can be very careful with the preamp and power ons etc but the risk of completely useless phones with no replacement drivers is pretty high. I might get to plug in a pair into the J2 some time.

Eitr > modi MB > Saga + NOS tube > vidar > code-x is a $2700+ stack. The extra $2-3/month should not be a concern if you're in this price range.

Use the first and a saga. Don't use a preamp with too much gain. I am using @Ray's adapter which is wayyy cleaner than if I made it myself.

Keep the knob down to zero before you turn it all on and slowly increase volume when it's all hooked up and turned on. I find a lot of play with my setup but just be sensible and you won't have problems.

The hifiman adapter is meant for OTL tube amps that need to "see" a load at anytime. Rest of amps are presumed safe going straight to the taps. Volume level and gain safety caveats apply.

From my experience, using the HE-Adapter degrades sound quality compared to using an adapter cable. The HE-Adapter has an advantage that it will protect the headphone from massive loads of the speaker that could harm the headphone, but if you're careful like @zerodeefex, you shouldn't really worry.

Figured it would make more sense to post in this active thread rather than digging up the old Enigma thread...

I ordered a pair of Enigmatics from Luis, and just got my cable in this morning so I can finally listen to them. Currently running them from a Modi 2 + Vali 2. I ordered these because I needed a pair of closed backs to use in the office (will be running from a Fulla 2 there), and I wanted to get something "darker" and "more fun" as a compliment to the HD800s I use at home. To my understanding, these are a slightly scaled down version of the Enigmas that didn't make it to a proper release due to being too time consuming to build.

Build quality is awesome. The mini-XLR connectors are super sturdy, cup/pad construction is solid, slide/headband fit and work well. I strongly feel these will probably physically outlast any other headphone I've bought. Comfort-wise I haven't had any issues after a few hours, clamping force is a little tight but I assume that will get better as they get used to my head (and vice versa). The wine finish looks great, and the way the wood is cut to sort of just fit in your hands is a nice touch.

Isolation is decent, and the sound leakage should be minimal enough to where office use isn't an issue. I've never really typed up any sound impressions before, and I buy a new pair of headphones once every 2-3 years so I don't have very many reference points in the first place, and these are my first closed-backs to boot, but I'll give it a shot.

I'll start by saying I really like em. Relative to my HD800s, the two main obvious differences are the reduced soundstage (duh) and the increased bass quantity. That being said, the soundstage on these is still plenty revealing, somewhere closer to the HE500s, you certainly aren't missing out in this respect. The bass has actual slam and impact to it that lasts, I imagine this is what people mean when they talk about "fun" headphones. The midrange is fully represented and engaging, I've yet to hear a track where I feel like the extended bass impact muddies up the mids at all. The upper most highs feel like they are a bit rolled off at times, but that might just be because I'm very used to hd800s.

I bought these primarily to use at work headphones, but I definitely see myself taking them home on the weekends, and in the long run maybe even getting something else to use at work just so I can have these on hand to swap out with at home. I need to make my way to a meet and check out the Code X and 'Code SEX', I'd love to see what voodoo Luis can pull off with open-backs.

    Congrats!

I own or have owned the Paradox, 2 Paradox Slants, Enigma, Code-X and have an HE-6 in Luis' hands right now. I can say the open back headphones do not disappoint. It's really amazing what he's able to work.

Way to strut into a thread like a total badass!

Congrats on the Enigma. Luis makes some remarkable headphones. I have never had the opportunity to hear Enigma, but I loved my Slant, lust for Code X and Code Sex certainly intrigues me. It would be interesting to see what he could create from scratch, ala ZMF...

It's almost silly how the Yeti dwarfs the Vali/Modi next to it.

Has anyone got to try out the Code-X on Black Widow and Mjolnir 2? If so, how does BW2 fare against Mjolnir 2 when it comes to driving the Code-X?

Most people seem to hold BW in high regard (I do too) and place it in a league or two above the Mjolnir 2, but from the specs, the Mjolnir 2 appears to have greater power to drive the Code-X's inefficient drivers. And headphones like HE-5/6/Code-X love power.
