Google, Amazon or Apple should just buy the whole thing and release all the content into the public domain where it belongs.

I find it a bit disturbing because it wasn't that long ago, there more film studios. Remember UA, Columbia, Orion, MGM, etc. MGM is still around, but it's considered a minor studio now, not the powershouse that is was during its heyday. The others have been absorbed.

The six major studios today are Sony, Warner, Fox, Paramount, Universal, Disney. With the merger, there will be five. I have zero doubts the Fox and Disney merger will go through fine. POTUS did congratulate Murdoch after the deal.

I'm more worried about all the TV assets they'll owned combined. The amount of cable channels owned between the two companies is staggering and Disney will own two over-the-air networks. I'm surprised there's not some sort of law against that.

World is changing. Netflix, Amazon, HBO are already producing premium content. Apple, Google, Yahoo will be next. In 2017, the Studios no longer hold the secrets to movie making magic. Much of the process is actually farmed out to third party vendors; and these third party vendors are just as willing to work with the smaller, indepedent, or new media companies. The new media companies have a step up because they own modern delivery and distribution platforms. The film studios are behind - partially because they don't want to cannibalize the theatre model, and also because the theatre owners are well organized (NATO - National Association of Theatre Owners.)

And at some point, people are going to get sick of superhero and SW movies. Westerns were very popular for twenty years.

I already feel that I get a much better deal paying HBO, Netflix, Amazon, CBS a small monthly fee than two visits to a movie threatre per month. With my projector, the image is almost just as good. And my horns and big woofers, the sound also almost just as good (considering how Dolby Atmos is sooo sooo not taken advantage of - just too much work to properly mix for it.)

BTW, anyone notice how badly the sound for Justice League was mixed and mastered? Someone deserves a warmbutt award for that one.

Heard about this and I was wondering about Disney owning Fox news, but Murdoch is keeping that piece of Fox.

I’d bet federal regulators will force Disney to offload the Fox OTA channel.

Murdoch is keeping the TV stations. They are also keeping the studio lot. Disney just wants to own the content. I'm sure they will tweak copyright law so content stays away from public domain for a millenium.

So long as they are done as well as Civil War and Rogue One, I'll keep buying tickets (probably at Midnight showings) and nobody does them as well as Disney (usually) does.

Also, I would Imagine that Disney now owns BlueSky Animation who has 'Ferdinand' coming out currently and is best known for the Ice Age movies which have made Yuge money internationally.

It's a pretty exciting time for movies, despite the ominous M&A activity building these giant conglomerates. There is so much new, high quality content being produced by studios across the production spectrum that it is getting impossible for an individual to consume everything.

These conglomerates sound scary, but really they are just turning into IP farms churning out disposable if not entertaining output. Disney is investing less and less in new IP, and why would they, when things like Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast make billion+ dollars. Leave the new IP to the experts - hungry up and coming talents which actually have something original to say.

I WORK in Fox, and yes, there is a feeling that being consumed by the mouse may be a bad thing. But its also reality, it takes A LOT just to keep up, and that may not have been available in the current trajectory. Its a feeling of inevitability, really. If not Disney, it would have been Verizon.

I guess when you think it about it that way it's better to be bought out by a company committed to producing content rather than a company to tuck you away in it's business portfolio to try to keep up with Comcast.

You guys don't actually watch the Hollywoods anymore right? I thought we were all better than that.

I feel like for cinema, content creation is just one of those markets that lend itself towards conglomeration. Sure, there are occasional low-budget breakout films, but by large they seem to be mega million projects.

Movies are this crapshoot, where going with the familiar is the safest, and at the same time stupidly indecent thing (quality, artistic content, long term value) to make. This is what piracy wrought, because, after accounting for all the revenue leaks, one wins big, or cant win at all. Star Wars was made on a shoestring and blew up, mostly for Lucas films, cause he retained merchandising rights. All the studios are so burdened by stockholder expectations, that failurre is not an option. Which of course in turn leads to massive stinkers, like Suicide Squad. The Chinese saved themselves, intentionally or not, from a major debacle, I think.
