exact same experience here (in a well treated room at a dealer; standmounted and driven by MBL electronics) - they'll completely change your understanding of "3D sound stage".

Wow, hard surfaces everywhere, not so much as a throw rug. That can't be pleasant.

Totally. Stone, glass and hardwood all around. Sounds like the trifecta of sharp audio reflections...

Actually, the listening room in which I heard them was pretty much lacking in soft soft stuff. A single experience is not enough to suggest that MBL's might be better at handling that. I don't know: they are certainly different. But... physics. Reflections and all. No speaker can avoid that. Erm... Right?

Why'd you take your shoes off to take the pic?

Gonna do any restoration on that? That would look boss with a bit of shine to it.

    Straight out of Sactown.

I've had a few opportunities to hear some of these; a touch bright, but otherwise quite fun.

That is the plan. I have cleaned it up with some wood cleaning products, looking pretty good now. Ultimately it would need to be refinished, but I'm not going to do that. I just got replacement grill cloth. Have removed the amp and the speaker, going to clean up the amp and speaker, try and patch the tear in the woofer.

Not sure if these qualify as pornographic, but they are unusual. New, hand-built copies (not rebuilds) of the Ohm Walsh F driver using newer materials. No crossover, phase coherent, and an omni (like the MBLs, but much less expensive). Very cohesive sound. Has its limits for sure but still the best speaker for jazz I’ve heard, though I’ve yet to try Harbeths.

Those look like a combination of Heil Air Motion Transformers with M&K subwoofer in an ESS tower format complete with grill cloth but minus the folded horn.

Yup, you nailed it. Original ESS AMT-1A speakers out of Sacramento. The bloke I bought my receiver from had 3/4 sets of these.

Love old school HiFi, and these have some funk to 'em, but low WAF. The last time I showed them to her, she just giggled and said "No". :(

Ok I don't know if you guys are going to see this as speaker porn or not but I got to fulfill a dream of sorts today and my wife relented and allowed me to bring my acoustat speakers up into my office. This is the dry run and not how I will leave things set up but after 30 years the acoustats (spectra 11) sound mighty fine. I've paired them with my hafler amplifers (dh220's bridged to mono) which are older than the speakers. The lynx hilo is the dac/preamp (and only modern piece of equipment serving temp duty until i find my hafler preamp to add) driving the speakers and my velodyne sub (hgs 10) from 1999. Sounds wonderful after all these years.

Are they planar magnetic or electrostatic? I remember auditioning Martin Logans once and those are the best speakers I've ever heard. (I've also only auditioned two set of speakers)

Not doubting that the speakers might be awesome, but knowing something about the piano company I'm guessing that their part of the name is purely a marketing/branding arrangement. Well, maybe they contribute something regarding piano grade finishing...
