I think I've died and gone to heaven. I had zero idea there were about a dozen craft beer places within 10-15 miles of where I live. After a few years here feeling depressed about the state of food and drink around the neighborhood, a friend of mine from work introduced me to many of these places. I'm going to highlight one of them today. Five Threads is becoming a frequent haunt of mine. It's a tiny place with a small bar which has since expanded to the area next door with a couple of booths and tables. It's still a tiny place. One great thing that I learned today is that I can drag my kids here. The place does not serve food, but Farm and Flame just a few doors down does supply food. Their food is pretty fricking awesome and better than ANY restaurant to the east in Calabasas proper (all the places I've been to so far in Calabasas are complete shit - I'm really not surprised.) FTBC does allow customers to bring in their own food!

My two favorites are the belgian Serenity and Twisted Threads in the "Bigger and More Complex" Five Pence Series on the board above. FTBC does change their beers around, so I have no idea if these will continue throughout the year. I'm not an IPA person, but the Jessica is impressive, probably because it has 14% alcohol. All the dark stuff is excellent as well. I will usually get a taster of at least one of them with a Twisted Threads. The Serenity is lighter and sweeter. The Twister Threads is a darker ale with a sweet nose and bitter finish. The Game Day Blonde is a light non hoppy ale that goes down super easy.

The taster on the very right is the Twisted Threads. You can tell which beers Julie and I prefer the most with the next photo:

It's all good though as we finished up everything rather quickly.

We actually brought Panda Express Broccoli Beef and Mushroom Chicken bowls with us this time. I'd say the Serenity paired best with these two dishes. The darker Twisted Threads would have gone best with the Bejing Beef, which I wish I had ordered.

After we were done with the Panda Express bowls, we drove down to the local Ralph's supermarket to grab a chocolate cheesecake keeping the BBA Coconut Porter in mind. Indeed, this was the best pairing. We tried the Coffee Porter too, but I think the Coffee would have worked better with a plain cheesecake.

So if you guys are ever in the Malibu Canyon / Agoura / Westlake area, give this place a shot.

I could have used this info before driving to your place on an empty stomach Saturday afternoon. Jack in the Box just didn't cut it.

Enegren brewery in Moorpark is a solid choice as well.

Enegren Valkyrie (German Style Amber) <--- Holy Cow. In my top five, or maybe three.

Shoot, add their Ice Cream Truck, Hefeweizen, Nighthawk, etc.

I know this wasn't the point of the thread, but it was the Panda Express stuff that really jumped out at me. I really like and miss American Chinese food (which is markedly distinct from Chinese Chinese food).

I thought I should also mention this before you guys partake in this kind of lifestyle: (@zerodeefex mentioned I might be promoting diabetes.)

Oh, don't worry. I'm not bullshitting you this time. Just one more minor hill (not minor).

Hiking under a blue sky, chocolate cake and craft beer. Life doesn't get much better than that in my book.

I ate a small bowl of Pho for lunch today, skipped breakfast, finished up 1/4 Jersey Mike's mini sandwich. For dinner, one Panda Express bowl, cheesecake, and the beers up there (share with wife) in the photos. I'm pretty sure I'm way under 2000 calories. Not to mention a three mile recovery hike with my son, where I showed him the local dump, which he thought was super cool.

So back again at Five Threads tonight. The downside is that a lot of their great beers are GONE. BBA Coconut Porter is gone. Twisted Threads is gone. The Coffee Porter Nitro (off menu) is gone. They did add a BBA Hey I'm Single (Belgian single). And the Serenity, Jessica, and regular Coconut Porter are still around. I'm sure they will add new brews to their menu. Hopefully they build back up their darker ales and porters.

Julie and I had been trying to drag one of our friends Angelique to this place for karaoke night. I knew she was good - she gives voice lessons, sings regularly at a club, and coached contestants for beauty pageants - but holy cow I did not think she was this good (keep in mind she didn't exactly prepare for this and just picked out a random song). Angelique said she was a bit shocked initially that the DJ took up the mic for the rap, but we thought that was kind of cool.

Pretty good local entertainment being out for just two hours. BTW, there are a lot of karaoke "pros" who make the rounds around the area. One of them was gracious enough to come over and give Angelique a compliment and a hug.

This is what it's all about guys. HiFi is great and all that. But nothing beats a few beers and good friends, especially ones who can belt it out like this. STOP stressing out about gear and f'ing enjoy life.

Looks like fun. Karaoke is more of a private affair in Taiwan. Groups of friends rent private rooms with a system and order food/drinks. Reverb is usually cranked to the max.
