Not at all. 50watts into 8 ohm. Bass slam is ridiculous w/ the he-6’s. Having an issue with a hum in left channel so seller is sending me a new unit. But what this offers for 300.00 is an incredible value considering the price of amps these days. Anyone interested I can get you in touch with the seller. Amp isn’t much to look at though

this would only be an issue if it was Class A for 50 watts. I suspect first watt or less is class A the rest is push pull. BUT as PAPPA says, it all happens in the first watt.

Papa Pass is a wise man. If he says so, well, that's how it's going to be.

    100%, nice find! @Dino

@Ray Do you have speakers that this amp could power?

On a side note, I'm not a specialist here, but someone told me a good while ago that speaker amps usually don't do well with impedance loads from the headphone realm. Anyone can say something in the matter?

High impedance loads are not a problem for any circuit as long as it can muster up the voltage. And for most headphones (even high ohm) the voltage is pretty minuscule, compared to speakers due to inherently high efficiency. In general speaker amps are optimised for higher energy transfer than any headphone would need. One can run into problems due to excessive gain (little room on the pot) and high noise floor.

Thanks, this makes a lot of sense. I was uncertain about this when hooking Susvaras to FirstWatt F7, but it worked nicely.

Sorry to take this quote from the dark side of the moon, but I have a cable Just like that! It came with a used power amp that I bought Jadis concert reference 40w 08ohm . Do you think it’s safe using if with my hd800 or he-5? You just gave some sci-fi ideia to try different sound signatures.

I think the general fuzzy exception is with OTL tube amps which require a certain load to operate within "optimal" parameters.

I've been using my hd800 sdr and he500 using that type of adpater cable without any issues for 6+ months now.
I hope there isn't any long-term issues but it's working fine so far.
In fact, I've liked it so much, I got rid of all my headphone amps, and just use power amps for both speakers and headphones now.

The ad gives the bias current at 100mA. That's going to support at most 0.3 Class A watts into 8 ohms.

FWIW, push-pull is still Class A when you're above the bias point. When the pulling side reaches -100mA of music signal the total (bias + music) goes to 0 and the transistor shuts off. At that point only the push side is working and you're in Class AB.

+1, also with some bass notes the sense of air developed up to the high frequencies comes through with no discontinuity, a drum thwack (in music), a deep bass note (generated to add suspense on shows or movies) just expands throughout the soundstage. The high frequency component that comes along with a bass wavefront is sensed and heard, along with how the wavefront decays in the recording space, organically.

For folks considering this amp, I'm pretty sure it clips hard, when high levels of transient low bass power are required, mostly shows or blu-ray. I use our 60" 4k TV as a preamp of sorts to switch between video sources, through a deq2496 for room correction, then to a MyDac, all optically. Had to lower the 20-100hz boost the 2496 set in room correction, +12db at 20-40Hz for the MMGs lol. I did also run everything at first through the preamp section of a great sounding old modded Proton AI-3000 with the loudness button engaged as well.

I don't remember it ever clipping with music, since most my music is from a laptop/Tidal via usb, direct to the MyDac and through a Lightspeed Attenuator to the STA200. I also don't remember it hard clipping through the 2496 before I tamed the bass boost while playing jazz or classical music concerts from youtube, *maybe* on hard piano strikes at the lower registers.

I'm expecting a crown xls 2002 to be delivered in a couple of days rated at 650W into the 4 ohm maggies. I will probably definitively know if it's the STA200 or the speakers re: the hard clipping after I run the room correction again. I love this amp but reluctantly, I just *have* to see what I get with 650w on tap but not expecting much SQ-wise. If the MMGs die, I'll have to put our 1.6s to work.

Hope this helps someone, I'm so glad membership to this board opened up again. Love the vibes on this board and been learning a lot from you guys since I found you a few months ago!
