I use spinners too. Be sure to set Valhalla at high gain.

tl;dr- Can't comment on how good Magni 3 + Modi Multibit is, but lotsa people seem to think that the Jotun+DAC is a bad combo.

While it does depend on what headphones you plan to use (HD6X0 given by your signature), and I haven't personally heard any of those three things in question, Magni 3 + Modi Multibit is probably a safer bet. There's been a fair bit of recent discussion about this in the Jotunheim thread, but general consensus seems to be that the Jotunheim's DAC module isn't great.

    To save you the trip to the thread;

    Thank you for answering!

    I got both HD600 and HD650.
Would it not be kinda... dumb? to get a modi multibit with jotunheim?
Since the DAC is not balanced.

not dumb at all. A lot of us have used/do use this combo. Optimize for synergy.

With HD800S Vali 2 is better than Magni 3 particularly in soundstage I own both. Rather than buy a Valhalla 2 I took the advice from the HD800 amp thread and went for the Vali 2 while waiting for my tube amp to be built.

You can't go wrong either way for stock HD650.

I prefer the Vali 2, but only with appropriate tube rolling.

If you want no fuss for cheaper, then the Magni is a pretty good bet.

Spending extra bucks for replacement tubes for a Vali 2 is money that should really be saved for a better tube amp IMO. Just enjoy the stock Vali 2 until you can afford a ZDS or one of the Amps & Sound amps.

I disagree completely. What's the point of buying a tube amp like the Vali 2 if you are going to handicap it with the crap tube that comes with it? You don't have to spend $100 on a tube either. You can get a very good Soviet era 6N3P-E with a 5670 to 6922 adapter for all of $30 and have a tube that is better than 98% of the 6922 tubes out there.

If you aren't going to replace the crap stock tube that comes with the Vali 2, you might as well save yourself some money and buy the Magni 3 instead.

Not to mention that the higher end amplifiers you also need to buy tubes for, so I don't think one should factor that cost in when weighing decisions. Let's not mince $50-100 in costs when we're talking about spending a thousand or two on ZDS tier amplifiers (plus potentially much more on tubes) since you can always just sell the Vali 2 at that point.

Hell, the Vali 2 only needs ONE good tube, and you don't need to worry about matching sets and all of that stuff. If anything it makes more sense to splurge on pimping out the Vali 2, and then selling it once you've saved up enough anyway.

Edit: And if you're close enough to afford a top-tier amplifier that $100 affects when you can buy it, just wait it out anyway. Either it's a long-term thing and you may as well just have a fairly solid amplifier (Vali 2) that you can use during those months/years, or it's a short enough period you should be able to stomach going without. And if $100 would financially devastate you, you're in the wrong hobby.

For the price of the amps you suggest, one could buy enough replacement/substitute tubes for the Vali2 to equip one's great-grandchildren and all between here and there. No offense, but I believe your statement is pretty nonsensical.

No matter how many tubes you roll in a Vali 2 it will still be an entry level amp. My point is to avoid wasting money.
