Not something I thought I would ever post .... I'm not a basshead. But for shits and giggles I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-XB90EX's. These have something like 16mm drivers and that acting directly on your ear drums can be quite unsettling.

Also a friend of mine is testing a new bass bin design with strong response down to 10 or 12Hz.

Not being a basshead means my collection is completely not geared to testing bassy kit. So what tunes would you suggest to test / show off / play around with? I know I could go find Techmaster P.E.B. tracks but I am hoping for real music with good and tuneful low end below 40Hz.

I've found a lot of EDM fits the bill (think Tiesto & deadmau5 as 2 popular examples), and I usually like Lorde's 'Royals' since the bass drops quickly.

Techmaster P.E.B. is real music! "Computer Love" is still one of my all time favorites. I use it and "Bassgasm" to test bass still.

You can look to movie soundtracks if you are looking to test bass. The first Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes movie is a fun soundtrack to use. And a new one is the the Blade Runner 2049. It has those "Bwaaaaaahhhhhhmmmms" that really push audio systems.

    Nice choice.

I included the rough time point in each song I would use for testing purposes if you don't want to listen to complete tracks. These are the tracks I use to evaluate my system and any tweaks I'm performing. Each track is reasonably well recorded so if it sounds like shit, I know something is wrong with either the gear I'm evaluating or the tweak I'm made.

Deadmau5 - 4x4=12 -Raise your Weapon 4:00 The song has lots of texture with a female vocalist, keyboards, drums, and synth

Anna Von Hausswolff - Ceremony - Deathbed 1:45, 3:30 Organ music with sounds down to at least 30hz. Any well recorded organ music would work. A variant of Bash's Toccata and Fugue in D perhaps?

Aphex Twin - Agieopolis - Someone else on SBAF recommended this song. 1:25 or so. It's a real test of a system.

Prodigy - Breathe - 0:24 The rapidly vibrating bass is a real torture test on poorly tuned headphones.

Ellison: String Quartet #2 - 1. Moderato, Allegro - 0:10 Borromeo String Quartet puts out some fantastically recorded music and a well recorded cello is a thing of beauty.

I hope you find something that meets your needs.

don't know if this is bassy enough, but I've always enjoyed this one:

I usually use Massive Attack's Mezzanine to test bass.

Dr. Dre's 2001 has some seriously fat, punchy and well mixed lows. Big Ego's is a prime example.

    hello,

    this:

Mr. Weston plays an Imperial Bosendorfer, Mr. Nasser should be (per Tom Waits) "chained up somewhere."

    cheers!

    Nifty bass and banjo...

I like this for the acoustic lows rather than the usual electronica. There's a couple spots where the scale sneaks even lower and it growls at you.
