Well then. I guess I'm lucky I got an PM-3 while I still could. RIP Oppo Digital.

This is truly unfortunate. I was hoping they would develop a second gen pm-3. And I love my 203 4k player.

I have planned that I would some day get an Oppo disc player for the TV / surround music system. Now it is more of a maybe. Anyone know a better alternative? I would definitely also want to able to play multichannel FLAC files without discs. I am assuming the Oppo UDP-203 does that.

I am still leaning towards getting an Oppo UDP-203 even with their going out of business. You never know when a company is going to discontinue a line of products, anyway,

The 203 is the most full featured product at that price point. If they are going to continue supporting it for years, I think it's worth a purchase

There's no real alternative to Oppo, even 10 years ago when they had better competition, Oppo was the always the best choice.

When trying to purchase a PM-2 for review last year, I was told that the PM-2 was quietly taken out of production. However, there was a rumor that a new headphone from Oppo was going to replace said headphone. I guess we can cancel that now?

I'll grab some spare PM-3 ear pads and make sure my baby will survive for many years to come.

I remember climbing on the want-one headfi bandwagon when oppo first got into headphones.

I also remember not being allowed (as per normal, on headfi: I neither understood nor agreed) to question the We are not the same company as the rest of, ahem, Oppo corporate nonsense. No? Well that's some weird coincidence that you have the same name, logo, web design, etc etc.

And now it is all-one-company dying. Well, yes, that's sad.

Oh, phones too? That doesn't seem to be included on the site linked. Maybe that division is staying alive?

To my understanding Oppo Digital was a division of Oppo that licensed some of the technology from Oppo and used their manufacturing chain. Oppo as in the mobile phone maker is not going anywhere. They are hugely successful in China especially.

    The confusion of corporate identities!

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. Oppo phones lives, then.

I sent them a message, and they response was: we are stoping the headphone productions and related activities. Rip

I wonder what killed them. I guess the home cinema market isn't exactly booming, maybe headphones alone couldn't keep them afloat?

Oh well, got to stock up on them PM-3 pads.

This is unfortunate, Oppo has been on my radar a long time. Never owned one of their products though. Fingers crossed they keep that blu ray master key up to date long term.

Hey @Audio Zenith, this must really suck for you guys. Any new products in the works?

Oh that's a shame, they made some really solid headphones.

I was teetering on the edge of picking up some PM-3 for work, too. It's hard to think of an equally nice unfucked-sounding closed alternative near the price (note, unfucked, Mr. Speakers need not apply).

I remember interviewing Jason Laio CTO of Oppo back when I was writing reviews. Back then the HA-1 had just been released and Oppo was riding a successful wave of headphone releases. Jason was and is a cool guy and I enjoyed listening to him talk product development.

That being said, I was never really enamored with any Oppo release in the headphone arena. The PM series was a good first offering but needed revision to stay current and keep up with the industry. I'd hoped to see GEN 2 headphone products from them, but it doesn't seem that will ever happen.

I've always considered the pm-3 Oppo's best effort. Responds well to EQ also.

Their universal players are all the rage on other sites, bummer.

Funny, lots of companies bought Oppo players for their SACD/CD/Blu-Ray drive mechanism, and made tons of products called universal players based on the Oppo mechanism.

    Here's one example:
    http://www.msbtechnology.com/the-reference-select-transports/
    18.5K$ and 24.5K$
Don't laugh reading this: (from their discontinued universal player, now replaced by the Reference and Select transports, that still use Oppo drive mechanisms)
    http://www.msbtechnology.com/transports/umtv-features/

"There is no point in reinventing the wheel. The design team at OPPO did an amazing job bringing a truly universal player to market with remarkable video. The BDP-103 incorporates Marvell’s Kyoto-G2H video processor with the latest generation Qdeo technology. We left this part of the technology alone (as OPPO releases firmware upgrades, you will be able to take advantage of them immediately). So we use the OPPO drive and video processing board modified only to produce cleaner power, better vibration control and more efficient thermal management. Additionally, we provided a new power supply as well as all audio processing."

Charging 20K+ for an audio/video transport...yes, you have to reinvent the wheel, shit happens :D
