I got into the bourbon thing back in 04 I think. In retrospect, that was the perfect time. The message boards were full of enthusiasts, but the information hadn't filtered out to the general public. The first bottle of Pappy 15 cost me a whopping $42. The Pappy 20 was around $85. Perhaps the best was the 6 bottles of 2006 William Larue Weller I acquired for a mere $60 each. Only many years after its release would this whiskey be confirmed as Stitzel-Weller juice. I had some concept that I was living in a time that wouldn't last, so I spent on whiskey freely.

Well nothing stays the same and these days I hardly drink, but the compulsion to buy good whiskey remains. Kinda gets it claws into you, like audio I suppose.

I always thought highly of Old Grand Dad 114, even compared to the pricey stuff. Has no fancy bottle or marketing, but a very solid whiskey for a steal of a price. If somebody tells me they like bourbon but hasn't tried that one, I tend to question their efforts in this field.

I got a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask the other week, it's a surprisingly great sipping whiskey. IT has a very strong peaty aroma which bleeds over into the taste, but it's amazingly smooth. This stuff ain't cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than Blue Label (and a lot better in my opinion, Blue Label was bland last time I had some).

I confirm, whiskey is great mate for listening sessions, me and my buddy "Priidik" got some "Laphroaig 10" one day and it was great add-on for our hifi equipment test session. I prefer whiskey to beer, when listening music, because it keeps your mind clear. Anyway, here in Europe the bourbon is not very common, we mostly drink irish stuff and scotts.

A few years ago there was a collection of 5 20cl bottles available called the Islay Collection. One of them was a Port Ellen 5th, 6th or 7th release depending on the year the collection came out. I bought every one I could find, realizing that just the PE was worth the price of the whole set, about $100 at the time.

I just got a flyer from Royal Mile Whiskies with a PE 9th release going for £1495, which makes a 20cl bottle worth about $650. The older ones rank in the same range.

Frigging WIN. Whiskey paying me to drink it :).

As of late I've really enjoyed Southern Comfort. Stumbled upon it by chance. I know purists wouldnt touch it, but it does taste excellent :)

You might also like Ardbeg. I prefer it to Laphroaig, though I enjoy them both.

Holy shit, Port Ellen is expensive.
Interestingly enough, I had the same idea earlier today. I discovered that Booker'ss, Yamazaki, and Laphroaig were all owned by Suntory, and went to see if there was something else from Islay owned by them. I settled on a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail, which is a bit more intense than Laphroaig Quarter cask, but no less smooth. I actually agree that it's better, but this isn't a side-by-side comparison. Well, that and I'm drunk off my ass on it. Clearly it was easy to drink :piratemug::drunk:

I prefer more herbal liquors, so my taste runs towards rye whiskey. I really enjoy Journeyman Federalist. This Midwest distillery produces a complex product with a spicy notes, smooth mouth feel, and a fantastic finish. I enjoy it neat, chilled down to about 50 degrees with soapstones, or as an occasional extra-special Manhattan at 2 oz Federalist to .5 oz Carpano Antica, 2 dashes of Angostura, and an expressed orange peel (not added to the cocktail.)

Just tried Kavalan Port Cask last night. I was!surprised how polished it was. I've heard negative feedback, so I didn't go into it expecting much. The spot to sample whisk(e)y is called "The Library" with a fitting name considering it's selection with a neighborhood bar front!

They also had the cask strength, so I will be going back there soon for a glass. Problem with the Library is their pricing is low and pours are massive... good problem, unless you're driving!

I've been trying to get my hands on this, but it's been out of stock at all my local store.

Do you have a Costco in your area of VA? I found it at my local one for a few bucks cheaper than the liquor stores. I was pretty surprised to see it on the shelf.

I'd need to drive to D.C. to check it, VA is a control state so only state-owned stores can sell hard liquor. I might look into it, just gotta drive slowly going home...

Any bourbon collectors? Just got a bottle of the Antique collection eagle rare 17 year. Not sure if I have more $ into bourbon or headphones right now. Need to get drinking.
