Speaker level vocals through headphones too much to ask for ?

I love vocals, like many other people, but I love them most through my KEF Q100's. Granted I'm running them through my SMSLAD18 which I only have because this setup is my first step into powered monitors. So I am expecting for them to sound even better once I upgrade to a actual speaker amp down the line. I love my KEF's because they were everything I wanted out of a speaker for the price.

Whenever I try to describe the sound signature of these speakers I just end up at the statement of "they sound natural, how I like my music to sound", right now at least. I'm not too good at pin pointing my sound signature preferences because I like I lot of music and I just haven't heard too many different products yet.

Regardless of all that, my one question is this. As I state in the title, are speaker level vocals too much to ask for through headphones?

 

Please elaborate on what you mean by speaker level.

 

So you mean headphones that emphasis the vocals without a veil or harsh digital glare to them or do you mean vocals from headphones that sound like you are hearing it from speakers?

I find that the HD-650 comes close to what I remember from some of the classic B&Ws like DM7 mk2, and original 802s. With that I'm referring to a slightly dark tonality, not the imaging.

Magneplanars have long been my favorite speakers for vocals, especially female. Part of that is the depth and holographic imaging from a dipole, open baffle, planar design. I'm not sure if it's even possible to recreate this sound with headphones unless some type of dsp trickery is applied.

 

Second HD650 for that, or HD600. To me they have tons of midrange (vocal) clarity and resolution at the cost of a smaller soundstage than the more expensive flagships. No headphone is going to beat even average speakers if any attention is paid to placement and room treatment though.

I agree. I owned Maggies for many years (would still but no longer have the room.) Friends who came over felt like the vocalist and band were present in the room.
