Are you looking at full kits or individual parts? Also, if nothing else the Sanwa parts will be more reliable/durable even if they don't give you a competitive edge.

I recently did a did a deep dive on this and almost went DIY myself but ended up deciding on a Hori RAP V Hayabusa.

If you have a drill and a study enough box you can drill the holes for it and assemble your own from a cheap Zero Delay pcb kit (or Brook PCB kit if you use it for PS4) and knockoff sanwa buttons. The only thing not to cheap out on is the stick itself. If you want a finished product there's the Qanba drone which is generally considered an adequate stick, but the stick isn't ideal and can be switched out with a Sanwa JLF.

I'm used to playing on keyboard, so I recently built a Hitbox from a custom ordered wood enclosure (with the layout flipped)

    https://imgur.com/a/Mo5geml

Total costs about $135 since I bought the Brook PCB kit and real Sanwa/Semeitsu buttons.

Picked up a HRAP 4 Kai from fry’s a while back for 100 on sale. I’m pretty happy with it for 3rd strike.

Third Strike, now there's a game for kings and intellectuals (or drunk potheads, depending on where you play...). Lot of good memories frequenting arcades as a kid (played mostly 3s and ST), so as an adult I wanted to revive that experience. My weapon of choice:

It's a comparatively rare beast: A Mad Catz TE S I picked up in 2011. Experimented with various alternative parts; eventually settled on HBFS-G2 buttons (plastic housings that can accommodate Cherry keyboard switches) with MX Blacks, and replaced the stock square gate of the Sanwa stick with an octagonal one.

To be honest, I might end up building a Hitbox-style controller for myself. After getting used to it, I find that playing on keyboard is quite nice especially for the movement hand, as accessing directions with dedicated fingers certainly feels more intuitive to me than engaging the gripping fingers + wrist mechanism to do it.
Also would mitigate some "sidedness" issues I used to have, as tapping fingers for motions in either direction feels more or less symmetric (might help that the fingers of my left hand are fairly adept, having played a lot of piano and violin growing up).

I also have a madcatz TE original that I need to solder a new controller board into so I can use it with newer controllers. Want to keep that square gate so I can switch between it and the octagonal gate I have in the HRAP4 Kai. I picked up a Qanba Drone for modding a while back when it was like 50 and included sf5 arcade edition from Newegg.

Thanks for all the input. Looks like no matter how I do it, building or modding something nice will cost me over $100 if I want universal compatibility and high quality components - even the cheapest sticks are $60ish right now. Leaning towards the Mayflash F300 as a base since it has universal compatibility and isn't too big. Will see how bad the stock stick and buttons are before ordering some Sanwa parts. If I really get into things, I can always move the guts to a better enclosure.

The universal compatibility requirement kinda kills it. I think that would require you to start with modding a full stick or start your DIY project with $90 for a Brook universal controller board. At least the Brook doesn't need you to pass through a real controller like the Mayflash does...

Yes, and I am probably being really dumb here because I currently only play fighting games on my PC. If I were to use the controller for another system, it would likely be the PS4 (which I don't own yet...). Maybe I should just grab the Qanba Drone which just went on sale for $40 at Newegg. No returns though which is weird.

I have one of these replaced with all Sanawa buttons/stick for Xbox 360/PC if you are interested?
You could always add custom art to the top with the “sticker print” from fed ex. (This is detailed on shoryuken.com forums).

Send me a Pm if you are interested. I don’t want much for it.

I'm pretty excited for Fallout 76. Online Multiplayer Fallout is exactly what I've wanted for so long, and the setting is fantastic as well.

Also this video was hilarious to open up Todd Howard's segment:

My thought on some noteworthy (subjectively) titles premiered at E3 (so far):

    - Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice: Chaotic, fast-paced combat (looks even faster than Bloodborne). Add grappling mechanic to combat system is an interesting take. I hoped it remains the same approaches to story-telling as Souls game, but it seems they using Nioh approaches (probably without historical element?). Miyazaki directed. Can't wait to try it out.

    - Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Lara SJW edition. Where's the subsurface scattering in trailers (Lara looks like Chibi character) ? I'm struggle to find anything innovative about the last Tomb Raider (Rise), and this new one.

    - Cuphead DLC: Yes, the world needs more Cuphead. I hope the studio have enough time to craft a big expansion - animation in Cuphead would already take a lot of developing time.

    - Jump Force: Arc System Works already showed everybody that Anime character can be turned to 3D models without losing their aesthetics. Why Bandai Namco can't learn that from ASW, instead of making these wash-out models?

    - Dying Light 2: I love the first Dying Light for the 1st person parkour elements (which i think is the best implementation so far), and fun melee combat with good crafting + looting system. The story, however, is ultimately cliche, boring, and emotionless. Implementing a big choice-and-consequence system into an open world games is surely ambitious, and i hope Techland can nailed it. I'm disappointed there's no mention of multiplayer - Be the Zombie mode.

    - Cyberpunk 2077: Vibrant in Cyberpunk game - definitely a breath of fresh air. Can't say much more without a deeper look in gameplay.

    - Wolfenstein Youngblood: How are they gonna tell the story of Wolfenstein 3 after this spin-off? I need something to complete the cliffhanger of Wolf 2, not adding new ones.

    - DOOM Eternal: As much as i love Doom 2016, i gotta say it started to lose its steam at the very end, where the gameplay just get repetitive and uneventful. I have no idea what ID Software gonna come up with, but this sequel gonna need more innovative elements to impress me.

    (To be continued...)

For Honor (Starter pack, which isn't the full game but eh) is currently free on Ubisoft with other editions getting massive price slashes. I'm really more of an RPG guy but I'd be lying if I said this wasn't pretty cool.

    https://www.techradar.com/news/ubisofts-hack-and-slash-for-honor-can-be-had-for-free-on-pc

I've been abstaining since I've been focusing on getting more books and junk than games, plus I have a bit of a backlog, but this is as good an excuse as any to pick it up and give it a shot. Maybe someone else could benefit from this.

    Music related:

Andrew W.K. performs with enthusiasm :punk: but the crowd gives no f**k about it.

Meanwhile, Bethesda shows 1 minute clip of a game technically not even exist (at this point the game probably not even looks like this trailer) and everybody wet their pants.

Yeah, it's funny cringe... But still a sad truth.

I'm an RPG fan myself. Kingdom Come Deliverance is more of my thing.

Trying our Far Cry 5 now. This is the best and funnest Far Cry game I've ever played. Very enjoyable game with colorful characters (good & bad guys) and more storyline depth. There is this guy called Hurk, one of the specialists, is so damn funny. Cracks me up. It's like a sitcom.

    Recommended.

I like FC5. FC3 become the epitome of Ubisoft open-world game. Than FC4 came along basically as a carbon copy that does nothing better. And Far Cry Primal basically combined annoying part of FC3 with unnecessary features.

FC5 plays out pretty similar, but the approach to story, the way it unfolds, the more diverse buddy system... it just feels fresh and fun. I genuine like it. A lot more than AC: Origin (which... i can't even get myself playing it after 20 minutes try it out)

It was outside E3- a day or so after announcing the (complex and somewhat stupid) DLC arrangement, they released this:

    Yes, they went there. Bastards.

Still, pretty sure the shrine is at least semi-jokey, as it includes the awesome Cade and chickens picture, as per:
