That looks pretty good, im thinking about picking one up. My only watches I've had were from soviet Russia, and kept time terribly.
Though this watch might be a bit too fancy

The Orient auto watches are definitely good. I had one for a number of years. Kept more accurate time than my Seiko SNK-805. But it is an auto and not even close to my new Orient quartz for accuracy. Certainly a good price for sapphire and a nice deal if you don't mind wearing every day (or auto winder cost) or resetting date when off for a while.

One of the few advantages to growing old. I can't see any of the dates anymore, so I don't bother setting them. ;)

Recently got a vintage 60ties Timex Marlin in. Lovely watch. Photos are next.

Their seemingly less complicated movements are super reliable. Read up about it. It is fascinating.

A Seiko 5 is a classic for a first mechanical watch. Good choice.

You actually have to gently shake it to get the rotor moving to wind the watch enough to start. Then, just wear it every day and the motion of your arm should wind it.

For the strap, pick up some leather protector like this https://www.amazon.com/Leather-Milk...tural+leather+protector&sr=8-2&ref=mp_s_a_1_2

You can use it on a lot of leather goods. Time to up your style game!

With the leather protected, the strap will do much better with sweat and rain. But try to keep it away from moisture when you can.

Will the one I got, a linked above, isn't the Seiko 5, but had same movement.

I got style now, with that watch, and my Cole haan jeferson shoes. And my Goodwill shirts.

Edit: and I got new pants because all my old ones had elastic waists

    Got it.
This thing looks nice, and feels really well made.
At 44mm, it is big, but compared to my old watch, not bad.
    Time to set it.

Compared to old, broken, scratched watch (don't buy a watch from soviet Russia)

This is a new Swiss micro - brand called L'heure Luxe. Just picked this up for around $400. Screenshot_20180828-114008_Chrome.jpg

Edit: they come with a 5-year warranty and a worldwide service network. Looking forward to getting it before I go on vacation next week

    Thanks haywood for your message

probably the phrasing of my message was rather poor I intended that to be a quiz.

Nevertheless I did not know the second link you posted.

The watch is a Glashütte/GUB Q1 from 1954. I thought that there might be some Glashütte/Lange aficionads around who recognise this watch:
Mid 40ies Lange&Söhne who made pocket watches at the time, decided that wrist watches would be a market for the future. Firat they bought movements in Switzerland in order to build wrist watches before starting the development of an inhouse movement fit for the use in wrist watches. This was the caliber 28 (non centered second) and 28.1 (centered second). This development was finished after 45. In 48 Lange&Söhne was disowned and the company declared a VEB (company owned by the people). The first watches appeared with Lange&Söhne VEB. Later all the watchmakers in Glashütte were united in GUB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (watchmakers companies Glashütte) and then the watches looked like on the picture posted. The 28 and 28.1 were SOTA calibers and it was decided to launch the Q1 version, which guaranteed exceptional quality. The movements of those watches were made by the former employees of Lange&Söhne in the former Lange&Söhne facility. If I am not mistaken they were still used in the early sixties.

This watch is special to me because it belonged to a Great Uncle of mine who was a so called late homecomer from the war. He was released in late 54 by the russians. During the last years of his time in Russia he was working on a state farm and was even allowed to earn some money. When he returned to West Germany he was allowed to take his money with him. Once he had arrived in East Germany he was told that he would not be allowed to take a lot of cash with him to West Germany, so he went into a store and bought the Glashütte Q1 gold watch and a gold seal ring. The price of the watch back then was what probably corresponded to more than three months wages after tax.
My Great Uncle's widow passed the watch on to my father who in turn gave it to me.

I do not wear it very often, it doesn't keep time too well according to todays standards although it has been overhauled by a proffesional watchmaker some time ago and it is not a watch for wear and tear. Yet it is a nice bit of family history.

@haywood whenever you happen to be in Germany give me a shout for that drink I owe you

Ah, sorry I thought you just wanted some background. In any case thank you for sharing the story and history of your watch, that’s one of the great things about collecting something that can be so personal.

Went out yesterday and bought myself a watch I've always fancied. Yes, I'm aware that half-gold watches may be a tad passe, but I've always love the Rolex Oyster my dad gave me.....so I got myself a fancier version of the Oyster. It's a used Rolex but restored to pristine condition....

The pic below is that of my old Oyster (the very same one my dad gave me) with the 'new' one I'd gotten.

This is very cool and I think, although not cheap, it is one of the most affordable ways to have a really nice watch that you can wear (with care) for a lifetime.

The smaller size of classic watches suits the extra visibility of the two-tone and makes it much more wearable with casual or business casual. Except for sports or the beach (you'd need to have the seals checked before exposure to water), these can be worn with just about anything for the right person.

Good choice and the fact that your father gave you the first one makes it that much more special.
