I think for movies one sub is sufficient, but for music I consider stereo subs mandatory. Others will certainly disagree though. Also, those home-made bass traps are probably the best investment I have ever made in anything sound related. Under $100 to build 4 of them, and I can't overstate what a big difference they make. Huge audible improvement in bass detail, and it really shows up objectively on my room waterfall graphs as well (I did a cursory look for a thread here on room treatments and acoustic measurements but did not see one. Might have to start one myself).

As for the subs themselves, Yamaha is not a name many would associate with hi-fi audio, but those subs are deceptively good. 25 years old but if you ever run across any used I would recommend them. 125w each with active servo feedback. It's kind of interesting that in totality they don't really do much, but what they do they do quite well (turn the Vidar off while listening at full volume and the subs sound pretty quiet just filling in the really low lows, but that also lets you hear that there is indeed stereo information there, and I would certainly miss it if it were not).

I really like the emotivia gear lights... if I were to make a HT system I think I would go with an all emotiva setup. Love all the maggies. @Kernel Kurtz your room doesn't seem that big, does it sound good still?

Hi msommers. I'll try to care less. As many of you know I tend to be overly sensitive and defensive. Something I'm working on... to answer your question though, yes, the rest of the system is staying the same. I also ordered a pair of skylan stands to pair with the harbeths as well. I received news that my harbeths should be arriving with the upcoming shipment to canada late this month / early next month. Hopefully I can have some pictures up by the end of the month. I would love to share with you guys how it looks.

Yeah, it's only 12x16, but it is what it is, I just work with it. It is pretty irregular with the sloped walls and a closet intruding in one corner (where I am standing in the picture), but I think that irregularity is actually an acoustic advantage. I've spent many, many (many!) hours playing with speaker placement and room treatments and I'm quite happy with the results. Initially I thought the Maggies might be too much speaker for the room, and I have no doubt they would sound great in a bigger space, but I have no complaints. It graphs pretty flat, waterfalls are pretty steep, there are a couple small suckouts I can't seem to do anything about - I think one of them is caused by the bed - but hey, it is a bedroom not a studio so such is life. After 30 plus years of buying, selling and trading stereo equipment I think it is as good as it has ever sounded, regardless of the room it is in. I've certainly heard bigger systems in bigger, untreated rooms, that sure don't sound as good to my ear.

Agree. I had stereo Sunfire Super Junior subs in my 2-channel system to supplement my Merlin Audio TSM-MME's and it really helped. Also agree with the bass-trap effectiveness. I made a bunch of anti-reflection panels and bass traps out of IKEA bookshelf frames, denim insulation, deer netting and canvas and they were great. Unfortunately, the basement flooded where I was storing them and they all were destroyed. Major DIY bummer...

My desktop speakers, Mark Audio Alpair 10p drivers in planet10hifi MarkKen10T enclosures. I was going to post a full set of build pics for the speakers once I got them set up, and then accidentally deleted all the pictures on my phone. Oh well. Hoping to get a measurement mic soon and see how they hold up from my listening position.

It always surprises me that people spend so much money on equipment, but so few of them make any effort to improve the room. Certainly treatments can be costly if you buy high end studio quality stuff, and if you are really picky about the cosmetics, but at its heart the concept is pretty simple and you can do great things with materials easily available at the local hardware store and some spare time.

That sucks, but just think of it as a chance to improve on your original designs........

In September ill be able to upgrade to a bigger space for these, and there will be an 82" tv between the two speakers.

Did some upgrades. Finally finished the sub for PC.

Excuse the mess, it's hardware mode.

I'm powering it from a 200w car amp in bridged mode, which is fed from a modded PC PSU. Now I have to decide what to do with 20 amps @5V that's redundand.

Current TV setup, monitors are here just for now, I'll replace them with 15-40 hz ported subs + 40-20k dipoles later (It'll be a 5 way active system). The tablet feeds minidsp digital signal from fm and dab radios via rtlsdr, streaming music, and cd/dvd. It could also be connected via mhl to the tv - not really any point there.

New temporary setup, JBL LSR4326P on Sanus stands. Temporarily randomly placed about my bedroom, moving to college dorm bedroom, will set them up better there. Right now I have them plugged into my DAC, but, I may hook them up with their integrated dacs, if I get a spdif interface.
Got the pair of speakers for $80, and they sound great. Very smart speakers with integrated DSP and communication between the speakers, allowing me to use one speakers controls to control both speakers (or up to 7 speakers).
Cant believe I got them this cheap. Unfortunatly doesn't have the calibration mic, or remote, but Logitech harmony controls them fine.
Rubberized finish had become sticky and was removed, hence the bad looks.
Im still surprised at the amount of bass these things can produce for their realitivly small size.

    $80???

A pair down here going for $600.

The room calibration really works well if you can get a remote. Those things are very smooth and detailed. Some of the most non-fatiguing JBL's around, but that is because they were copying Genelec at the time. They were nearly as good as the Genelecs - a split hairs difference.

    Nice score!

Wass $100, but I asked if the guy would take $80, and he did.
I may buy I mic, I have seen them sell on ebay for around $50. Even without calibration, they still sound great.

I think this is @Vansen 's second go around with these. That's a great endorsement all by itself if you ask me, but he should already be familiar...

The speakers above are the Philharmonic BMR. If you search around this forum, you'll see that a lot of members here have had them. Some love them, some dislike them. Regardless, one thing is for sure: these are picky speakers and require a lot playing around to find a system the plays well.

I've never owned a pair before, but have a couple of friends with them. With the exception of the room, I knew exactly what these would sound like on my gear, which is why I waited so long for them instead of hunting for something else.

@Hooncake PartsExpress ran into some issues back in March. It took Dennis a couple of months to secure a new cabinet supply in China. The new cabinets are 17"H x 10"W x 14"D vs the original prefab cabinet at 20"H x 8"W x 14"D.

I got a new plant for an empty space!

I know nearly nothing about room acoustics, speaker placement, and managing bass issues, but I was having some bass issues. Even at over two feet away from the wall, I felt like I was having issues with reflections off the back wall. They would go away when hung packing foam on the wall behind the ports, so bought some panels. Plus, I’m less likely to upset the neighbors.

...I need start learning about this stuff.
