This plant should help. Sounds stupid but it's true.

May I humbly suggest a few good reads?

Also regarding the sub bass or lfe, 20-40hz, my personal experience is that a single powerful sub in a corner works best.

Also, you might want to read this - specific to your problem, I believe.

"The scientist who first noted a room’s split acoustical personality (if you will) was a German physicist named Dr. Manfred Schroeder. (Not to be confused with Schrödinger, the dude who discovered that a cat explodes if you put it in the microwave.) "

    Top level information right there.

Forgot to mention, in order to keep the bass inside the room and not going to the neighbours, decouple the speakers/subs from your floor. A simple rug/rubber mat will do, although there are specialized solutions too. Also helps to divert the bass energy into air instead of as vibrations into ground.

I've got a calibrated mic, and have made calibration curves for other mics. It's really not expensive to buy one yourselft, but if you'd like I'm sure I can make one for you for free, it'll just take time.

Dayton emm-6 or umm-6 for cheapers, earthworks if you're serious.

Small river runs through campus. When it rains and gets high, we go rafting in it.

I found that panels of that thickness help a lot with reflections, but much less in terms of bass issues, especially standing waves - which are really linked to room geometry and speaker/sub-woofer placement. Agree that more research and some efforts with a mic/SPL meter is called for.

Also I had good luck in using Jim Smith's book "Get Better Sound" (http://getbettersound.com/store.html). Just looked it up and the frigging book costs something like $40 now! Wow, don't remember spending that much. Anyway, if you'd like to borrow my copy (and don't mind some notes scribbled in various places) let me know and I'm happy to loan it to you for a while. Just PM me if you're interested.

    Cheers

Damn... we’ve come a long way in the past fifteen years in dorm life. No more fighting for your one square of screen real estate on 27” 480i CRT to play something like Halo.

Yeah, not quite a dorm, but on campus apartment, so pretty close. Either way, its a nice setup.
Here is my new desktop setup as well:

Are you going to get them up on stands (or blocks)? Or do you listen to them from bean bag chairs?

Rockin' the oscilloscope - nice! What are you studying - EE or something?

Also hope you're okay! See the crutches in the picture. Hurt yourself carrying those JBLs? How much do those things weigh?!?

Oscilloscope is broken. I may try to fix at some point, but looks complicated. Power cord is cut, but there may be more issues than just that.
I am studying mechanical engineering with an acoustics concentration.

Don't worry, I am all good, those are my roommate's crutches. He broke his leg playing rugby.
Yeah, the big JBLs are 85lbs each. Very heavy.

That's why college is nice. I have no one to tell me what to do. No one to say "those pa speakers are huge and ugly", or "that rear projection tv is 2ft thick and takes up the entire room".
I think I'll pick up an electric organ for free on Craigslist too.

My last TV was 2-foot thick because it had a CRT tube in it. (Damn, came far to close to a very nasty tautology there!)

    (bought 2006, given away 2016)

Well it's a projection tv so it's more like CRTTT (one for every color), so you're not exactly wrong.

If you ever decide to ditch it that fresnel lens is one sick thing.
