I really don't want this to degrade into a suck Marv off-fest, but holy f**k that CT is scary. I'm really glad you're on the mend.

Nevermind all the scary health effects... but how do people even eat the stuff? They all have this sickly soapy taste to me.

There's a small sub-set of the general population that are particularly sensitive to the taste, so you could fall into that?

The after-taste is what bugs me. Can always tell when something is sweetened with Aspartame or Sucralose because if it's aspartame I'll be tasting it for the next half hour.

Barring complete abstinence from sodas, I wonder what would have more long-term health impacts on people in the long run: Diet, or Non-diet soda? After all, refined sugar is pretty bad for you in its own right. I can imagine more than a few people seeing these findings in a clickbaity news headline and thinking "Aw hell, may as well go back to a can per day of the regular stuff."

That's one very nasty looking lobar pneumonia. The rest looks fine, and there's no visible cavitations, necrosis or bronchiectasia. Good!
I'll drop by pulmonology today and let them see the scans too.

I got used to drinking only water from a reusable bottle. You can buy some nice ones with filters and stuff. Other then that i drink tea without sugar, i just make the tea stronger. Used to put sugar in it and i built it down slowly.
Don't drink coffee but there are ways to improve the taste like bulletproof coffee which is actually nutritious if you're keto or fat adapted.

Oh I probably have pop maybe once or twice per month, I'm just concerned/curious as to the fallout in the wider population this might have.

And bulletproof coffee is amazeballs, keto diet or otherwise.

Well, people still smoke after all the things science has told them about it, so maybe not as much as I first imagined.

Of course not drinking soda at all is probably the best choice but if there's a choice between diet and non-diet soda I'm personally going for the diet one. Aspartam and stelvia has been showed in multiple independent studies to be harmless in the normal doses consumed. The following organization consider aspartame a safe sugar substitute:
    • FDA
    • Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives
    • United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization
    • European Food Safety Authority
    • World Health Organization
Maybe that will change some day just like people in the 30's thought that smoking cigarettes were good for you... who knows. But in the meantime we know with absolute certainty that sugar is bad for us, so I'll take the "probably harmless" option over the "definitely bad" option. As for the taste of aspartame I think some people are more sensitive to it. But for me it's almost the opposite now, regular soda tastes way, way too sugary and I nearly can't drink it.

If you want a tip for an inexpensive meal drink without any sugar or sweetener I like water with ice cubes and a few splashes of bottled lime. It's quite healthy, has some cleansing properties and also aids digestion. Might take a couple of weeks to get used to the taste of it if you're used to sugary or sweetened stuff but once you do you'll realize it's much better for you.

I'm glad that all this stuff about Aspartame has finally gone somewhat mainstream. Twenty years ago when it was mentioned, it instantly got thrown into kooky conspiracy theory territory. After all, the FDA approved it, it MUST be safe. Maybe in another 10-20 years, people will start making the connection between GMO food and various health issues.

Food since man first selected a plant cultivar is GMO.

Crude, hacksaw GMO, but GMO nonetheless. Where do you draw the line?

For some reason aspartame etc don't taste sweet to me, at least not in a sense that they can replace the taste of sugar. Plus they have a chemical taste, for lack of a better word.
I would take natural sugar any day. Sugar is only bad without self constraint, as is most anything else in this world.

I do have some friends that are PhD in genetics that talks exactly that. Genetically modified food will cause problems. Wait and see.

GMO crops and food is fundamentally scary, we're messing with 3.5 billion years of evolution because some geneticist here today now think they know what they're doing. Probably the very definition of hybris.

I'm no expert, but this seems kinda biased. The graphs are rather heavy/confusing to read.
Its also just in vitro and e.coli.

The study is thus only done on bacteria that have been largely isolated from the host, giving an insight into possible mechanisms. We know that must stuff affects bacteries, when such methods are used. So... Id take that article with a grain of salt, just like most.

There is a large and growing mass of articles in this subject. This one was just a sample.
About the methods... this article was chosen due its pristine methodological choices and respectful group of scientists in the field that conducted the study.

What is people on here's view on dairy products?
I've gone from eating/drinking alot of it, to barely anything, and then back to consuming a decent amount of it again. Reason I first wanted to lower my consumption was that ive heard it helps with mental clarity and less slim "production" (runny nose etc).

I've not read any studies about it. However, theres certain things like overconsumption of calcium etc can do to you - which was my case at first.

Pasta without grated hard cheese is heresy, and if I don't have pasta at least once a day, why even bother living?

Straight milk is tough on me though.

Morning cappuccino is no biggie, but milk and cereals is straight up danger zone.

@Prydz I luv cheese but I am trying to abstain from it. It does wonders to beat the crap out of your arterial function. Yet there really is no vegan option that is anywhere close to the taste of real cheese. (have not had the fancy, unobtainium artisan nut cheeses). All the other vegan options are just full of oil.

If you want to learn more about dairy and its affects go to nutritionfacts.org and search. A few eye opening videos for sure.

I still enjoy dairy despite being lactose intolerant. Normally that'd limit my consumption to mature cheeses that aren't as likely to trigger a reaction, but as much as I love those as well I also happen to consume more straight up milk and softer cheeses than is advisable given my disposition— they're just that good!

Articles on the health effects of dairy consumption just lead me to think that, as with many things in life, balance is key. A moderate amount is good for you, too much will increase the chances of you finding an early grave. Not so much ODing on calcium so much as all the fat you get with dairy that I've a problem with.

As for my stance on GMOs, I know I'm something of an outlier but I'm standing well away from that debate and consuming whatever my budget can afford. Arguments that people have been modifying crops for millennia don't quite ring true to me because I feel that there's a difference between careful breeding and gene editing, but at the same time I don't think they're entirely as harmful as others would have you believe.

"Organic, pesticide-free" produce is a nice idea in theory, but there are flaws within that system as well, not the least of which being that any benefits to one's well being stemming from the consumption thereof may well be negligible, but costs significantly more on top of that
