sounds like a latency issue not clock, fyi. Have you used latency mon if running a pc? That might help you isolate. I had a similar issue when a win update blew out a good network driver and installed another one. Had to update driver from intel and now all is grand. Drivers hog interrupts and that caused havoc with audio.

@bixby, I use a Mac Mini but I need to check latency as well as buffer sizes on the Audirvana player. Thanks

How are you using a Lynx with the mac mini, isn't that a pcie card? Or do they have a standalone version of some sort?

I'm guessing your Mac Mini can't handle all that without stutters..

    Hello SBAF

I'm looking for a new audio player that's small but as good as music can come probably under $1000. I'm currently rocking iRiver140 with a modded cmoy that does 750watt into 32ohms, I don't know what it means for me. I done some research and will summarise my targets:

Cowon Plenue D - EQ ability, BBE JetEffect, 20+ hour battery life

    Hisoundaudio 3 - small

    Shozy Alien +

And if its worth saving for, the exotic DAPs I found

    Venturecraft Valoq
    Opus#2
    Astell&Kern KANN

But they are not really small like an ipod so I don't want it.

Oh and I'm considering on using a "Spider Surround Pro" with all this, its a Dolby Atmos 5.1 type device for portability.

    I'm setting up my 7.1. for gaming/movies.

L and R channels (front) will also be for stereo use for music - LX521 + 2 subs (<30Hz). Not sure whether to go sealed or ported, will be using dcs385's.
I tried to sell my rokit's but apparently, it's slow... so I'll just use them for surround and back channels (4 of them, two rokit's 4 g3's and two 5 g2's, I'll put 5's as back, they are a bit bigger). Subs will also be used in mono mode for the lfe channel.

This leaves me with the center channel. Ideally, it should be below / above the tv, so, a soundbar -like- thing fits this perfectly, although soundbars are in general a piece of shit. I'm considering making something myself too, although it's obviously a lot easier to just buy something.

Any help from @ultrabike please too.

That leaves me with no monitors for my PC, for that I'm considering making a linkwitz lxmini clone but with dayton drivers.

    Thanks :)

You probably want to to timbre match the center with the L/R channels.

As for monitors for your PC, consider vanatoos. There's an RMAF special right now, too.

I would go ported for the subs, and may consider crossing higher than 30 Hz but you should experiment. For center is difficult because I don't think Linkwitz did one. Timber matching will be hard because I don't know of many H1396-04 + H1658-04 center designs, but this one looks interesting (better than soundbar) if you want to have fun with DIY:

    https://www.diysoundgroup.com/home-...-size/home-audio-bookshelf/s2000-mtm-kit.html

You can ask for the flat packs with your purchase for $15.50 extra. Well worth it IMO. This design would be 6" tall and should fit nicely. I cannot model performance because I don't have the woofer specs. But this is a Paul Carmody design, and I like what he does so far.

As far as making a Linkwitz Lxmini w Dayton drivers, be careful. Changing drivers may lead to a different design. @zerodeefex Vanatoo recommendation is very good. Those are great speakers.

I would take a look at the Sony ZX300 or the 1A used. For something really small you an try the Shanling players; have heard a m0 that was alright for the price.

Been considering the Modhouse Argons mk3 for a little while, wanted to know if anyone had experience with these? I purchased the massdrop x Sennheiser jubilee a few weeks ago and I wanted something with a completely different sound signature to compare them against. I'm a little concerned that they might require more power then my Audio-gd NFB 11.38 can provide. Otherwise if you guys have any other headphones you would suggest. Looking at no more than 600$ price range.

has anybody heard both a freya and a conrad johnson et3/5?
the jump in price is quite a lot, i'm wondering if its worth it but i'm very tempted lately after hearing what a ~budget tube pre(freya)/power amp (nord one up stereo) combo can do

I like whatever it is tubes do to the sound stage and the sound in general but the bass always seems to be the weakness of tubes

Bass can hit hard and low with tubes but it really depends on the tube used and moreso the amp design/power supply.

I say this because my kt88 power amp when using the passive part of Freya hits hard, so it's not tubes alone causing flabby bass. Active Freya with the tubes I have sounds a bit floppy in comparison and what most people would consider "tubey". Not sure how far down the 6SN7 rabbithole I want to go to find just the right tube for a preamp considering the crazy pricing that's out there now...

I have no CJ experience but from what I've read, they're more on the warm, bloomy and wider end of the spectrum.

    I'm from Europe unfortunately :(
They look interesting, I'll try to find them for an audition. Thanks. So the most important part would be to use the same drivers, right? That's what timbre matching means?

If going ported, isn't it better to stick to just the frequency of the resonator itself, that being the port? Otherwise you do get a bit of group delay problem/port misbehaving at frequencies you wouldn't want it to. Asking cause Linkwitz said so. From my experience it's perfectly fine, port does it's job at low and doesn't interfere an octave above tuning freq, and group delay never bothered me, but I kinda trust the man more than myself.

Thanks for the link, I'm most likely gonna do that/something like that.

Mostly quick and simple question...I think. Ive been wanting to pick up a backup DAC to compare to my Modi Multibit and just to have. I was going to get an SDAC but now that the Modi 3 is out should I get one if those instead since Marv seem think is a decent bit better than the SDAC now?

Would definitely get the modi3 over the sdac.

Hello I am brand new to the forum so bare with me if I lack some audio vocabulary!

I currently own a pair HD 598s and a Fiio E10K amp/dac and am relatively satisfied but I would like to upgrade my setup to experience something new and better.

I have a $300 budget and would like to use all $300 or close too. I would prefer open back headphones. I like to listen to all types of music with the exception of rap and metal, and im not a big fan of rock either. I mainly listen to classical, pop, edm, and some alternative genres and would like headphones that would pair good with that type of music. I was looking at the HD600s and the Beyerdynamic DT 990 premiums but I am very open to suggestions and would like to some help picking what to buy!

    Thank you for reading :)
