My current favorite is RedBreast 12yr. So smooth it's dangerous. This thread reminds me: I need a whisky in hand.

Yah I was about to say, Japanese whiskey isn't a great base for an old fashioned since its allure is its subtle flavors and would be easily overwhelmed by the bitters. They are good stuff though.

If you use the Japanese whiskey you bought with bitters....

I kinda thought the idea of bitters with what is essentially a japanese scotch seemed a little weird, but hey what do I know. I've pretty much been in a permanent state of wtf for years.

    Neat.

Maybe just to mess with everyone I'll make an old fashioned with it.
I can't buy bourbon now anyway, just spent $45 on this whisky, and the guy said my Flor De Cana arrives Friday, so I have to buy that for $35. Later though, I'll get some bourbon.

Both MD and VA ABC stores have lotteries every year for residents. They each only get a case or two and it's not exactly cheap but the 12 goes for (if I recall) about $75 now. Time to make some friends...

Throw a couple more bourbons in there Old Grand Dad Bonded is a classic...actually Wild Turkey 101 also is pretty decent. Those are both on most shelves and under 30 bucks. Elijah Craig or Eagle Rare he may have and is around 30 bucks and really good.

The real answer it seems is you don't..unless you find a place the does a lottery or drawing or something and then thats not a guarantee obviously. Basically if the place is asking a reasonable price for it it's gone before it even hits the shelf. If it hits the shelf its because the place is asking way over MSRP for it...and usually they will get it and the cycle continues. I gave up on Pappy some time ago.

Maybe get on a local, keyword there, bourbon facebook group..I got a bottle of George T Stagg a few years ago and that's how I got mine. There is a local store guy on there and I asked where I may be able to find a bottle because I had never had it, he basically said Ill hook you up, to get it though I had to buy 2 of his store barrel picks, basically help me out a bit, ..which is like really twisting my arm because I was probably buying them anyway lol. Seriously the place has the best store picks Ive ever had.

Im not sure there is anything quite like it pappy that's readily available, its a wheated bourbon and wheaters are not all that common...I've heard that mixing Weller 12 year and Weller Antique gets you close, they are all from Buffalo Trace and rumor is the mash bill is very close or even the same...but Weller 12 isnt really sold where I am at and the Antiquie has become nearly as hard to find as Pappy the past couple years, So Ive never actually tried it. The lack of antique sucks because Weller Antique is probably one of my favorite bourbons...especially at the under 30 bucks it USED to go for. And when it does end up here you get the same situation you get with Pappy, people ask way over book for it.

Pretty sure 75 is the MSRP on the 12 year now...which I don't personally get..I think its just Weller 12 in a different bottle and they charge more for it. You want real Pappy you get the 15 or up....a bottle of 15 SHOULD cost around a hundred dollars...but again you'll probably never find it for that.

QQ for you Whiskey drinkers out there, from someone who is not a spirits guy.

I'm looking to buy a friend a nice bottle of whiskey/bourbon/whisky as a present and want to spend max around $250-300. I'd like something really special. The bottle shop I called suggested (and said they had in stock) the following:

    Compass Box
    - No Name
    - Hedonism, The Muse
    - Story of the Spaniard

    Dalmore
    - 18 Year

    Barrell Bourbon
    - Batch 015

I realize the prices on these range quite a bit, but I was leaning towards the Compass Box Muse or the Dalmore 18 Year.

So would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions you might have, both on the items listed here, and any suggestions of things I should try to track down (nothing super-rare please, don't have time) in that price range.

    Thanks in advance!

@mscott58 - Other people will have better recs than me but if you want something safe go with Macallan 18. It's an HD600 of the whiskey world. Probably not the best but hard to beat.

Do you know if he prefers scotch or bourbon? Maybe take a pic of his existing liquor cabinet.

These. I would readily drink either.

One of my favorites, even though it's not super expensive, is the Oban distillers edition single malt. It's just an easy one to enjoy.

That suntori toki is my favorite whiskey I have had. So good, just picked up another bottle.

Anyone had kaiyo mizunara? I was going to get it, but was $57 so I passed.

Not really sure. One of our mutual friends says they mostly talk about bourbon, but then again he himself is a total bourbon-head. And unfortunately I can't get a shot of his cabinet, as I'm trying to make this a surprise. Cheers

Oh and when I say Macallan 18, I mean specifically the 18 year. Do not get the 22 year unless you find a good deal. It's still a good whiskey but, 18 years is a sweet spot.

If your friend likes peat, then Dalmore 18. If not then Macallan 18.

Maybe it's 18-year-olds that are the sweet spot (misinterpretations no doubt incoming) - I'm the same with Glenlivet.
