Stay safe everyone. Just heard back from some of my friends living out near the area they got evacuated and are safe. Sucks how this has become such a yearly thing.

There seem to be so many fires in California. What is the cause? Lightning? Arson?

Holy moly, stay safe...and sorry it's your turn in the barrel, Marv.

(For those of you wondering, evacuations due to SoCal fires are not unusual--we were evacuated in 2003 and 2016, and Alex was evacuated in June. And we're overdue for a quake. Remind me again why we live here.)

Hot catalytic converters lighting grass on fire, hikers smoking pot lighting grass on fire, people throwing cigarettes outside the window, lightning rarely, arson for sure. Usually when one fire breaks out, an arsonist will start another somewhere else (news outlets are asked to keep mum to not give copycats any ideas). It would not be campfires near these hills (closed after dark), but definitely campfires at other spots.

This fire started near Bell Canyon, a super nice neighborhood secluded deep around the hiking trails / hills between my place and Simi. I suspect typical human cause.

With dry conditions and wind like this, very easy for fires to spread. The fires jumped over 8 lanes of highway 101. Heading towards Malibu along the ocean. A playground kind of isolated from other neighborhoods, Grape Arbor Park, is totally destroyed. My kids were bummed. They remember riding the bouncy horses, now on fire, like how they would be in a twisted Tim Burton movie.

These are the times I wish it were 'The World of Tomorrow' we were promised after ww2.

We haven't had a repeat of last week's storm that wrecked the port and erased major roads but its still constant gale winds and rain.

If it were a Buck Rogers future I could share the wet, believe me we have enough for everyone in class :(

    Stay safe.

Years of drought has really dried out California. Also wildfires are supposed to occur and we for decades did not let any burn causing tons of burnable material to build up. Another thing is as it becomes more unaffordable in LA, people are moving out to more Forrest areas.

So basically California is a shit show and every year is going to have awful fires.

Too many people buying electric cars. The energy costs and pollution from materials mining for and production of batteries is contributing to climate change. Sierra Club closing down the nuclear plant just north of San Diego didn't help either.

We can do solar, but solar to gas is like an AAA battery to dilithium powered matter anti-matter reactor. No one wants the face the truth that we are simply massive consumers of energy and that green tech only really works for super rich people. Thanos had the right idea.

Yeah, I was just thinking, the worst we get is a bit of snow. All you have to do to avoid that is stay inside.
I feel bad for people who live in much worse disaster prone areas.

Closing the San Onofre nuclear plant was so unspeakably idiotic

Indeed one of the reasons electric cars make little sense to me in terms of pollution. They miss the forrest from the trees. Car emissions problem solved, at the expense of a likely much worse problem in terms of large toxic batteries disposal. It's stupid.

(Yeah I like Teslas iPad deal, but I'm not getting one).

Same actually apply to solar. Not only are solar cells low yield. They have a lifespan, after which they are toxic garbage.

Efficient means of transportation is IMO a great option. But everybody in SoCal seems allergic to public transportation, which in turn is shit.

Yup. My front neighbor lost his San Onofre nuclar plant job (ex-Navy aircraft carrier nuclar plant specialist) when this happened. He moved to the east coast. So I guess is back to nice green coal for us, or whatever other random bullshit.

Renewables are great but they’re mostly not on demand unless you have a way to store excess power, and the most efficient way to do that is... more batteries. You also need a huge swath of land for any large-scale solar plant, so aside from boutique applications like Apple spending down their Scrooge McDuck sized money pile to create bespoke power plants for server farms the only place it makes sense is on individual buildings where homes can actually become net producers.

I hope everything works out, especially with your neighbor still holding out. Hopefully the fire crew knows she’s there in case they need to bug out.

Here in Calgary one sees many Teslas. Not sure if the drivers realize that almost all Alberta's electricity is generated from coal.

Re. Nuclear though, I dunno that having a station in the middle of an extremely active seismic zone is a great idea either...

Hope the fire passes you by, @purr1n .

Why do these things happen more often? It's not climate change, as the kids' school GATE programs are trying to cram down their throats under the guise of "inquisitive" learning.

It's because more and more people are encroaching into areas less suitable for habitation. Areas historically hit by floods, tsunamis, and fires.

As I mentioned, I checked the fire maps before we moved in. Our street was at some risk (the street had already survived mulitple fires since the late 50s), but surrounded by higher risk areas. This appears to be what is happening now. The houses in the neighborhood that caught on fire have been in the high risk areas. The civil engineers doing the mapping knew what they were doing.

Many of the newer buildings, the apartments, the luxury homes inside the gated communities, were built in high risk fire areas against the hills. You know, the ones overgrown with dead grass.

This is why this shit happens "more" often. More and more humans living in areas which had historically burned into a crisp. No one likes to talk about this more simple inconvenient truth. Blaming "climate change" is much more convenient.

And my buddy from the Navy (I was USMC) was part of the security team there, and he transferred to a new job with SCE. The nuclear regulatory commission and Friends of the Earth really helped screw the So Cal consumer

And we don't have the infrastructure to charge them all either.

This is nothing unusual. All fission plants have a limited lifespan and need to eventually be decommissioned.
