    I went for the Alnico. My reasoning was that if they were decent, I wouldn't mind having spent the extra $$$. If they're not so great, he takes returns so the difference spent is moot and I would just be out a bit on the cabinets. I've taken worse losses on shitty headphone gear.

    Plus I would be lying if I didn't admit I wanted to own drivers with Alnico magnets at some point in my life for their audiophool properties.

    That's a slightly different implementation. The folded horn will inherently roll off the highs to where the AMT takes over. That might actually be good.

    Shazam! If the 8" drivers look like that (the non-faked measurements), I'd shudder at what the 15" would look like. It makes me angry the big distributor of those 15" drivers massaged the frequency response so much. Makes Fostex super smoothed provided FR plots look honest.

    1. I don't know if you haven't noticed: most of us still are in junior high despite our biological ages.
    2. You asked for advice, we gave it to you. The dudes responding have real experience with DIY speakers. Maybe not this particular 15"; but these guys know full well the limitations of their "best-of-breed" 5", 6.5" and 8" drivers in single-driver or multi-driver implementations, so they view your proposed design with not the 10", not 12", but the 15" driver with great trepidation.
    3. There are ways to make this work. Folded horn and AMT is a possibility. This needs help up top for sure. But you really need to be into DIY and creative approaches to make it work.
    4. The implementation that you suggested is likely to be pure shit. The junior high devolution is simply a warning to everyone. These are very educated opinions you are getting based on physics and 50+ years of loudspeaker modeling data.

    Visited my cabinet builder today to drop off the drivers. We hooked them up and gave them a test drive using an ancient Sony receiver and local hits FM radio. They sounded promising! I didn't have space in my car to bring them back home so I'll have to go back in a week or two. Until then he's offered to keep burning them in for me and having some other visitors give them a listen.

    It was pretty surreal to see what started as an idea in my head as a semi-finished product. I totally understand the personal satisfaction of DIY, even though I didn't have the time or inclination to build the cabs myself this go around. I'll report back once I have them in room on my own setup.

    LOL. The dudes are just busting your balls. I don't build cabs anymore. Everyone knows this. It's a pain in the ass. The most I will do is assemble flat-packs with glue and clamps, cut circles into baffles, and solder a few caps, coils, and bricks for crossovers.

    Carry on. If you can, take a nearfield RTA measurement with a microphone one meter away with one speaker (in a fairly open area like the workshop above), and another at listening position (sometimes easier done with only one speaker playing if you get strange nulls).

    Agreed would like to hear more about these. The design seems similar to Winders pic near the start of the thread - is this a standard design recommended for running these drivers full range? Or just coincidental?

    The 12" here is slightly different as it has the whizzer cone, but same idea as Winder's 15". Whizzers do good and bad things, but mostly good when they are needed.

    The "standard" way for single driver wide band is usually with 6" and 8" drivers, often with a back loaded horn to increase efficiency. Optionally, a supertweeter is employed to cover the top octave and a sub to cover below 50Hz.

    The use of larger drivers is an interesting approach. Speaker manfacturers like Zu have pushed it to 10" with help on top with tweeter.

    Wtf, cabinet builders are legit. I am getting to be too busy to build my own. I have access to a CNC machine at the library so I literally just bring my sheets down there and get them cut with a CAD file.

    If I didn't have that I'd be using cabinet builders too.
