If you like blended (and cheap) try Dewar's 12 'The Ancestor'. It's about $22 bucks a pop where I live, not the most complex whiskey, but nice and smooth and a bit sweet. Don't drink it cold! Kills a lot of the flavor. Chilled with an ice cube doesn't hurt much.

What's a good whiskey for mixed drinks? Obviously avoid single malt scotches. I tried Johnny Walker Red and it was way too smoky to mix with other things. I'm thinking only bourbon is the way to go

I'm a sucker for a rye Manhattan, @Cspirou. Good bottles don't break the bank either. You can pick up a bottle of Rittenhouse in most places for about $30.

I'm with @monacelli - rye for mixed drinks, bourbon with a small amount of water to taste; or on ice if you must. Locally, I can get Canadian Club rye (bet you didn't know they even made that) for ridiculously cheap, like < $15. A smack upside the head neat, but quite good in a couple holiday drinks I've made.

Got this nice whisky for $42. Bottle looked really cool so I bought it. Willett pot still reserve. Pretty good I say. Worth the price, and a nice 94 proof.

The current collection, they really help with studies and critical listening :piratemug:. 21yo is the current favorite, while the 105 cask strength lasts forever. The Oban isn't really my cup of tea..

Picked up the Toki on sale for about $20 recently, haven't tried it but I've heard good things.

I continuously buy the Toki for $45, so I think it's good.

Sadly, Suntory has had to discontinue the Hibiki 17 shown in that "ad" due to the Japanese whisky shortage.

Hibiki 17 is good stuff. Hadn't seen it anywhere in a long time until my boss's wife brought a bottle to our Christmas party last month. That one made a trip with her from Japan, and apparently is basically gone over there too.

This suprised me so much. One of the finest expressions of Johnnie Walker hands-down.

Hmm I don't generally gravitate towards canadian whiskies, but they are supposed to have some good Ryes. So Maybe Ill give that one a try. Pretty sure the early Whistle Pig that was selling for, I cant even remember, was just some old Canadian Rye they bought. a while back I got a bottle of Alberta Dark Batch Rye and I can't say I really cared for it.

Rittenhouse of a good goto. Bullitt is solid. If you can find the Knob Creek Barrel proof and a store pick of that....yep that's good.

    I gotta try that stuff.

Most of the older Japanese whiskies around here are nigh impossible to find.....

I couple days ago I got a barrel pick Russell's Reserve that Im currently working on. Pretty darn good so far.

Got a couple of different Col. E.H. Taylor releases, but hesitant to dive in due to difficulty finding the ol' Colonel these days.

Guess I'll stick to the more entry level Buffalo Trace, since even Eagle Rare 10 is hard to find.

Of course, I could just be happy with Jack Daniels Single Barrel or Maker's 46...

Don't get me started on single-malts. I've got a bunch of Laphroaig and Ardbeg that I've been wanting to break out - for the right occasion, of course. Gotta be in the mood for the smokey peaty stuff.

Cleaning out some stuff while helping someone move. Anyone know if this is worth trying?

It looks just big enough for a single serving. Only one way to find out!

Man crack into those Taylor's! I have a couple and they're really good. Also small batch is findable for sub-$50 with enough patience. Same for the ardbegs and stuff. No time like the present! Then again I have a bunch of opened and half full bottles but variety is the spice of life.

    @Cspirou

    Hmmm.... https://www.kabukiwhisky.com/product/royal-60-bot-pre1989-72cl-43-3j-26-1-63878/

That's the big bottle though. 72cl.

Do you know how it's been stored? All whiskey should be stored upright in a cold dark area for long-term storage.

It's a very old a respected brand though, they've also branched out in recent years: https://www.suntory.com/

If it had been the big bottle I might try to sell it myself, but since it's the small bottle I might save it for a very special occasion.

Let me finish that Johnnie Walker Green and Whistle Pig 10-year... :D

I have to be very, very attentive and visit the liquor stores regularly if I don't want to miss Col. E.H. or Eagle Rare. Buffalo Trace Distillery really annoys me with their games! I'm glad Maker's doesn't do that with Maker's 46. I'd probably curl up and die. ;)

Wow that really is old. I hope it's awesome when you open it.

I just got this, and I'm finding it quite tasty:
