Just a heads up for EU SBAFers: As of 1 February 2019 a treaty on free trade between EU and Japan came into effect. That should mean that for everybody with address in the EU there are no import duties when ordering goods from Japan.

Edit: Corrected by AudioFriend (below). I posted it here because if I weren't mistaken, the price reduction would constitute a long-lasting "deal" in relation to buying goods from Japan.

 

TL;DR: You still have to pay the VAT.

Explanation:
Customs are not taxes.

The customs payed after imports from Japan are removed by this treaty. The taxes are still in place. Value added tax is a tax. Therefore you still have to pay VAT. You also have to pay the customs procedure fee if your courier service impose such a thing.
The only exception is if the value is below 22€. Those "small value shipments" are currently excluded from the customs process by an another EU regulation. It's in effect now, but planned to be cancelled at 2021.01.01.
Customs for electronics are usually around 3%. VAT is another 19-27% depending on the destination country. Therefore this treaty doesn't constitute a significant price difference for everyday people.

Wait whaaat. After 2021 the small value shipments are no longer exempt??? Who's going to process those millions of packages imported across the EU yearly? Right now even if >22eur it still passes sometime due to the import lottery, they can't process everything, especially during times like Christmas/NY period...

 

There won't be that many packages anymore, because it will not be worth it to order them. When €10-€20 customs agent fee and VAT will be added to every package, it won't pay off anymore to order low value items from China. I guess this is exactly the point of the change: to remove the disadvantage from the EU sellers, who always have to include the VAT in the price regardless of the sold item's value.
