If being an ORFAS member means spending money on myself and not my deadbeat offspring and trampy ex-wife, count me in! And yes, I did indeed get an HD820 and loving it.

Well, at least that's what I'll tell myself if life turns out like that.

Love the contest submissions all! Unfortunately I have the artistic creativity of an orangutan, so I'll be an observer on the sidelines.

Back to the HD 820 though, I gave them a listen and thought I'd share some impressions. However, I'd definitely advise getting the salt ready; it was NOT a proper audition with my own gear/gear that I'm intimately familiar with. I'll mostly be comparing to a HD 800S (I don't have any real experience with the original HD 800; apologies to those that do). I get that this might be kind of unfair since I'm comparing closed to open cans, but I feel that this comparison is the most valid one I have since I usually just don't listen to closed cans.

    Impressions:
    • In terms of just frequency response, they just don't seem to be markedly different than the HD 800S. In this regard, I consider them functionally equivalent.
    • Doesn't seem as.....tight?...as the HD 800S. Seems to be a few percentage points behind its older and open sibling in terms of technicalities.
    • Soundstage has the "in-your-head" feel that is present in every closed headphone I tried. On the note of soundstage, it seems to have this strange character where certain sounds seem really far away; to the point where it seems to disappear in the mix if you're not listening closely.
    • The mid-bass bump bleeds into the lower mids. This isn't by much and is actually enjoyable to listen to.
    • Not a bassy headphone. Definitely a HD 8xx family headphone in sound.
While I would have to give them a fair audition in order to form a better opinion, I feel that they're about 85-90% of the HD 800S while being more expensive (and closed). At this present moment, I'm not really sure who this headphone is for (unless you really want a closed HD 800 to listen to while your significant other is trying to sleep).

I’m going to go ahead and say that, based on my measurements and listening, the HD820 (red) and HD800S (green) have very different frequency responses:

This one did not spark joy. Kinda sounded like M50X with a treble spike and way more resolution. I can imagine some people liking them just as some folks swear by Ultrasone and Grado.

Thanks, @Hrodulf! Jesus Almighty that FR looks like the worst parts of the TH900 and the HP-3 had a baby that they dumped in foster care for being too ugly.

How's resolution compared to the stock HD800/S though? Also, is it any better as an overall package compared to the Z1R?

    It's basically this.

The resolution is there. Problem is, with an uneven AFR curve you get all kinds of masking going on, so resolution suffers as well. It probably isn't much worse than the HD800S, but it's way harder to appreciate.

    As for the Sony...

    upload_2019-8-12_13-58-49.png

Apart from the upper mids giving you the finger at 9kHz, it's not too bad. Maybe the spike at 3.2kHz might also be annoying, but it's not too prominent. So I guess, yeah... Choose your poison.
